Bignor, Sussex, Surrey & Kent Cottages
Probably the best preserved building of its type remaining in England, The Yeoman's House, listed Grade II*, is a stunning example of a medieval hall house. Set in about an acre of garden, the present owners have lavished much care and attention on refurbishing the spacious accommodation and have hit on a great balance between preserving the original features and the addition of more contemporary details. You'll be delighted at the fine timberwork, vaulted ceilings upstairs and some charmingly uneven floors. The huge chimney breast in the double bedroom is particularly spectacular. In contrast, the kitchen is completely up-to-date with striking red worktops and stainless steel units with all the modern appliances you'd expect.
We think you'll be impressed by the garden which has been beautifully designed by the owner. There are an abundance of flowers and shrubs, giving interest all year round. The only choice you'll have to make is whether you sit out on the paved terrace or under a shady tree, both lovely for al fresco dining on a warm summer's day. This really is an exceptional place to spend some time getting away from it all.

The house provides a wonderful base for exploring this beautiful part of southern England. There are lovely walks straight from the door up to Bignor Hill and opportunities for all manner of outdoor activities such as mountain biking, horse riding, golf and fishing as well as horse racing and polo at Goodwood and Cowdray Park.
Less than 10 miles away are the historic towns of Petworth (numerous antique shops and Petworth House) and Arundel (ancient 12th century castle and River Arun cruises), while a little further to the south are the cathedral city of Chichester and the West Sussex coastline stretching from Chichester's huge natural harbour (birdwatching, sailing, windsurfing and sandy beaches) across to Brighton, the south of England's most vibrant seaside town.
Bignor itself is a tiny hamlet; within the parish are the remains of a Roman villa with well preserved mosaics. The nearest shops are in Petworth, Arundel or Pulborough, which also has a 75 minutes rail link to London. Plus there's a good local pub 15 minutes' walk away in the next-door village of Sutton.
"We booked The Yeoman's House for a special occasion, and it fulfilled everything we could have wished for. Beautiful location, gorgeous gardens, a truly historic home. We had everything we needed ...and more. We visited Arundel, the Roman Villa just a few moments walk away, and enjoyed walking on the South Downs. We would recommend Kingly Vale, the Weald and Downland Museum too."Guest's review on TripAdvisor 2017-09-28
"We oohed and aahed at the house and gazed at the lovely garden settling into autumn. We visited nearby Petworth house and village and Midhurst Cowdray estate and wondered the lanes. We took the very short walk on the footpath to the side the house to the Roman Villa and marvelled at the mosaics and walked to the White Horse pub in Sutton and had a meal. We sat on the bench by the church and enjoyed the vista and calm. We watched the pheasants on the lawn, listened to the owls, visited by robins and squirrels. We were rained on and sunned on and just relaxed for a few days. In the words of the song ' Who could ask for anything more?'"Mr & Mrs Morris 2016-10-01
"Our stay at The Yeoman's House was very much enjoyed, as we used it as our base for my daughter's wedding at Bignor House on Saturday 24th September. Everyone who stayed there or visited was enchanted by the age and character of the property as we were, and had many questions. The house looks splendid as a backdrop in some of the pre-wedding photos we took inside and outside. The wedding venue, the weather (especially as the ceremony was outside) and The Yeoman's House as our home for the weekend were all brilliant."Mr Wood 2016-09-01
