Introduction

In a private location on the Wiltshire-Dorset border and set back in its own grounds from a quiet country lane, West Hatch Cottage is an attractive, substantial building with a particularly tranquil feel. The surrounding countryside, an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, is mainly parkland and contains superb walks and rides, ideal for those keen on outdoor pursuits; and it is also very well-placed for exploring the considerable variety of attractions in the area. The Saxon hilltop town of Shaftesbury is nearby, whilst the cathedral city of Salisbury is about a 30 minute drive: between the two are ancient drove roads, green lanes affording wonderful riding or cycling and panoramic views. The New Forest and the World Heritage Dorset coast are easy day destinations. The Georgian city of Bath, and numerous ancient monuments such as Stonehenge and Old Wardour Castle, as well as superb historic houses like Stourhead, Montacute and Longleat can all be reached in an hour or so.

West Hatch Cottage, despite its name, is in fact a spacious house. Its comfortable rooms provide a real ‘family’ feel and the surrounding lawns are a safe haven for children to play in. This is a truly ideal place to stay in an interesting and very varied area.

What our guests say

Beautiful house in lovely area

We stayed here with our whole family and our little dog and loved the accommodation including the spacious farmhouse kitchen, with plenty of room for family dinners. The TV room is a wonderful place for the youngsters to 'chill' and the beautiful drawing very welcoming for the grown ups to relax in. Lots of charming pubs nearby and plenty of country walks. The house is very well equipped and everything in perfect working order. A quiet, peaceful location with farmland views and easy access to local amenities and places to visit. We would highly recommend West Hatch Cottage and hope to return one day.

Perfect house for a relaxing holiday

We wanted a place to celebrate my birthday with our children and grandchildren. We were blown away when we got there as the house is so roomy and fully equipped. There are two king size beds plus a twin room and a single. We soon felt at home and spent most of the time playing and relaxing in the garden. None of us wanted to leave and aim to return. Would love to also go there again with friends as you can spread out from the spacious kitchen into the drawing room or the TV/playroom. Thank you for renting out such a lovely house.

We've had a lovely weekend at West Hatch Cottage - it was a family gathering to celebrate my 70th birthday! The house was excellent, had everything we needed and was very nicely presented - the table football in particular had an extensive workout, and the log fire was much enjoyed. The weekend must have been a success because the kids never wanted to watch the TV!

Beautiful house in a quiet scenic location

The house had everything we needed, plenty of room and the beds were very comfortable. Lovely weekend break for 7 of us away from our normal busy lives. Children loved the games room with the table football (so did the adults). Kitchen was equipped with everything we needed to cook meals from scratch. Oven was a bit dodgy but this was documented well by owner. Only down side was previous people staying at the property never cleared up their dog mess and I was unlucky to tread in some in the back garden. There are no local pubs or shops you can walk too so this needs taking in to mind. All in all a lovely hidden gem. We would stay again and recommend to others.

Fantastic country cottage

We had a fantastic time at West Hatch Cottage for a friend's birthday. The cottage is in an idyllic setting with plenty of space outside to relax and unwind. The rooms are huge and there is plenty of space internally as well with a huge living room and games room and then off the stunning kitchen/diner another large living room. I would not hesitate to recommend this setting. We will be considering it again, I just know it.

Wonderful getaway with plenty of room for family to drop in

We found this gem whilst looking for homes to buy in Wiltshire. This area is one of our favourites. Easy access to the dear old 303 to travel west to my side of the family and equally easy for my wife's kin in Surrey. Salisbury is a lovely city full of charm (although with a frustrating ring road where you are beleagured by roundabouts).

The house is delight. It has plenty of chocolate box charm (with rose around the door for example) but it is also a very functional home that has obviously been lived in and loved. We felt cosy from the start and we appreciated the two en suite bathrooms as well as a large communal bathroom. Plenty of space downstairs with a nice snug/tv room and a separate formal lounge with wood burner and no TV - a great bolt hole if you have children or even teens who don't quite see the world the same way as you do. The kitchen has a gorgeous Aga but this was not active in the June spell when we visited. That was a shame for Aga fan Jane (my wife) as she loves cooking on them. Even so, there is an additional electric hob and double oven attached to the regular oil-fired set up. I would imagine that with the whole set up in operation, this would make an excellent setting for a Christmas dinner. Finally, the gardens. These are a real bonus with a sort of wilderness garden to the rear (full of ox eye daisies when we were there) and a simple lawn in front which was excellent for my sporty sons even if my eldest left his football behind! Altogether, this was just what the doctor ordered. We'd had a pretty hectic year and this was just the kind of respite we needed. Idyllic.

The whole package, the location, the peace and quiet helped by a dollop of good weather was just what the doctor ordered. The cottage had everything anyone would want.
