Introduction

Inspired by "Sweetpea", a beautiful holiday annexe owned by friends in the Blue Mountains of New South Wales, the owners, Doug & Mary Chapman, built "The Summer House" on their return to the UK. Newly built to extremely high specifications, it stands next to the swimming pool in the garden of the owners' house. It is conceived as the ultimate retreat for short getaway breaks, offering a number of very desirable features - use of the open air swimming pool, a hot tub, state-of-the-art shower cubicle/steam cabinet and "home cinema." There is also immediate access from the garden onto footpaths leading to the Pilgrims' Way and North Downs Way, which end at Canterbury while Junction 7 of the M20 motorway, which links the M25 (London orbital route) with the Channel Tunnel and the ferry port of Dover, is a mile distant.

The surrounding area offers enormous scope to its visitors. Leeds Castle (only 5 minutes' drive), Igtham Mote (N.T), Hever Castle, Chartwell (N.T.) Sissinghurst (N.T.), the historic naval dockyards and Dickens Centre at Chatham are some of the attractions within an hour's drive. The cathedral city of Canterbury and North Kent coastline are also easily accessible via the M2 motorway. Maidstone, Kent's county town is 2½ miles away and provides good shopping facilities, while the ancient village of Detling, with a good country pub, is within walking distance.

Accommodation

The Summer House's oak framed and weather boarded exterior conceals an ultra modern interior, notable features of its design being electric under floor heating, the impressive range of lighting options, smoked glass, privacy-affording living area window and height adjustable, pneumatically operated "bucket" dining seats. N.B.The steepish open tread stairs leading to a sleeping gallery make it less suitable for more elderly guests. Note also - some traffic noise when you are outside.

Stable door entrance into an open plan living room comprising a sitting area with L shaped, leather settee, a fitted kitchen area with built-in appliances, and small circular dining table and seats. Downstairs shower room/wc. with shower cubicle/steam cabinet incorporating various programmable shower options - impulse jets, "deluge" shower, etc. plus an integral radio. Open tread stairs to a sleeping area (N.B. limited head height) with double bed; access out onto a balcony with views over the garden, farmland, vineyards and North Downs beyond.

Small paved sitting-out area, use of the garden area immediately outside the conservatory and access to the owners' woodland. Barbecue. Use of the heated open air swimming pool in June, July & August. Hot tub. Infra red patio heater.

What our guests say

Lovely getaway

My mum and I stayed in this beautiful summer house over the bank holiday weekend. The use of the hot tub and heated swimming pool was excellent! The projector screen and surround sound to chill out and watch movies on was a great feature. The gardens were absolutely stunning and leading towards a wood at the back! Perfect place to retreat from the hustle and bustle of city life. The owners were friendly and happy to help if needed.

The summer house was absolutely beautiful, very cosy and comfortable with swimming pool and hot tub. The grounds and area were stunning, Mary and Douglas are very friendly; they made us feel very welcome and gave us good advice on pubs and places to visit; we would recommend staying here 10/10. We will definitely be coming back.

Highly recommended

If you're looking for a quiet romantic getaway this is the perfect spot stunning views and massive gardens for yourself, nice pool and Jacuzzi is really good. Very friendly owners and they live in site so if you need anything there always ready to help (but they keep to themselves so you don't really see them) just 10 -15 min from cinemas and bowling Looking forward to visiting again.
