Peacefully situated on a 4 acre smallholding in the depths of the Hampshire countryside, The Stables have been sensitively converted from an original farm building, once used to house shire horses, into exceptionally well thought-out accommodation, providing the perfect retreat for a couple wishing to explore this unspoilt corner of southern England.

The surrounding countryside forms part of the South Downs Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and for the active visitor there is fantastic walking and cycling on the doorstep. There are riding stables and several golf courses nearby as well as excellent game and coarse fishing in the Test and Meon valleys. The Stables also provide easy access to a great variety of attractions; the cathedral city of Winchester (ancient capital of England) is just 7 miles away while Portsmouth’s historic, naval dockyard (HMS Victory, The Mary Rose and HMS Warrior), Jane Austen’s House at Chawton, Gilbert White’s at Selborne and The Watercress Line (heritage steam railway) are all within half an hour’s drive.

For shopping, the medieval market town of Bishop’s Waltham is 3 miles away and there is an excellent pub - The Brushmaker’s Arms - and an award-winning local brewery a mile away at Upham.

The Stables provide a spacious, well laid-out interior, all at ground floor level, with carefully researched furnishings and paint colours, eco-friendly, ground source underfloor heating and a delightful garden area with attractive planting. The owners keep horses, chickens and rare-breed pigs in the fields beyond the main barn so an added bonus for guests is that free range eggs and sometimes ‘home-grown’ bacon and sausages are available. The owners have gone to great lengths to ensure that all their guests’ needs are catered for and this is evident throughout the accommodation.

Entrance from outside into ‘outer’ hallway. Further internal entrance door into inner hallway with access to a shower room/wc. Light, very attractive, open-plan living room with access out to the garden and comprising a sitting area with woodburning stove, a dining area and an oak fitted kitchen. Double bedroom with large, antique pine bed and kingsize mattress.

Inviting garden area, attractively landscaped by the owner, with an array of insect-loving plants and grasses.

What our guests say

Well recommended - quiet location with all home comforts

Well executed conversion with good quality amenities make this a great place to stay. We found plenty of places to visit including Winchester, 4 National Trust properties, Watercress railway, Bishops Waltham, National Motor Museum at Beaulieu and the Historic Naval docks in Portsmouth. I would advise you to study the map before leaving. We followed satnav instructions on the way which took us down miles of very narrow lanes with few passing areas. We found that going out and returning through the village of Upham (1 mile to the south) was easier. Really enjoyed our stay!

Best 2 person accommodation ever

The Stables was the best 2 person accommodation that we have ever stayed in. It was the perfect retreat away from the daily hustle and bustle of urban life. The detail by the owners was exceptional from the very well equipped kitchen right down to a little bedside clock. The property was well laid out and very clean and well decorated, a lot of effort has been put in by the owners to make it very comfortable and welcoming. It would not matter what the weather was like outside, if it was wet and cold it would be cosy and warm with the log burner and underfloor heating and if it was hot and sunny there is the use of a magnificent private garden. You'll find it difficult to go home after experiencing a stay at the Stables.

Perfect location for a relaxing stay!

We stayed at the Stables for three nights. The accommodation is faultless and the owners have thought of every last detail. The location is close to Winchester and perfect for a day out to the cathedral and military museums. We would highly recommend the Stables and would definitely like to return to enjoy a few more glasses of wine around the log burner! Thank you for a wonderful stay!

Accommodation & surroundings were great. The Stables as beautifully furnished and fitted, everything you could want was supplied. Owners were available but invisible. Highly recommended for a stay in this beautiful part of the country. Great base for Winchester, Chichester, Portsmouth, Southampton.

Perfect Christmas!

My partner and I spent five days here from 23rd December 2015 and thoroughly enjoyed our stay. The cottage was laid out to make us feel right at home with a charming lay out, a comfortable living space and a log fire to cosy-up to in the evenings. The surrounding area had a variety of countryside walks with great views over the Winchester countryside. A big thank you to Justin and Merriam who hosted our stay perfectly and made our Christmas extra special. We look forward to returning in the future.

‘Thank you so much for the gifts you left for our arrival. They were very much appreciated and consumed. The Stables have been built with great thought and are a great success. We found the accommodation extremely comfortable and private. Today is our last full day and the sun is shining with intent which suggests a nice walk is on the cards. Best wishes.

We have thoroughly enjoyed our stay here at the Stables this week and it’s been such a refreshing and relaxing time here in deepest rural Hampshire! We’ve enjoyed the peace and tranquillity, the searing swallows and cooing woodpigeons whilst drinking Pimms in the lovely and very charming gardens. You’ve both made it so lovely and we thank you for the bottle of red, the eggs and the marmalades which were a very nice thought. We’d certainly love to return to the Stables very soon. It’s an absolutely cracking place to stay and we highly recommend it to friends and family!

Fantastic stay in a wonderful converted barn

Wonderful place to stay, very quiet in luxurious surroundings. Everything you would need in this well laid out accommodation, furnishings are lovely, kitchen well equipped, bathroom has wonderful shower. The welcome basket was nice touch with homemade flapjacks, bottle of wine, breakfast granola, fresh eggs and more... Would highly recommend this place.

Fantastic Hideaway

Superb first impressions as soon as we drove thru the entrance. Beautiful Romantic location away from it all. On entering the property only one word came to mind, "stunning" was the first word followed by "immaculate" & "so very clean". Marian (owner) had kindly left us some groceries to get us going which was exceptionally thoughtful. Brushmakers Arms 5 mins away was fab for a great country feel and great food. It was our 31st anniversary and the lady even left us a card & bubbly. Can definitely recommend The Stables to stay and will definitely go back for another & another visit.......thank you.

A great place to stay and so much to do – walking in the Meon Valley, fishing in Chichester Harbour, Beaulieu, Winchester….. If you eat at the Brushmaker’s Arms the food is good, but the portions are huge. We will certainly recommend The Stables to our friends.

The cottage is a perfect 'home from home' and ideally situated for fantastic walks in spectacular scenery.
