Standing on its own in open farmland with long views over fields and woods, this former shooting folly has instant appeal. The building is wonderfully quirky and unusual with a crenelated mock church tower at one end, a stepped gable at the other and in between a simple, brick and timbered thatched cottage. Transformed from a ruin by its current owners back to its former glory, the cottage is a unique ‘hideaway’, perfect for walkers, honeymooners in fact anyone seeking peace and tranquillity in a remote rural environment.
Situated on the Shropshire/Staffordshire border, an hour and a half's drive from Birmingham and Manchester, it is well situated for exploring this attractive area. For walkers there is a network of public footpaths all round, the 7½ mile circuit from Cheswardine via Hales and the folly itself being mentioned in The Times article “A good walk” of 30 April 2011. There are also plenty of good cycle routes. The Shropshire Union canal and the Shropshire Cycleway are nearby and medieval Shrewsbury and Ironbridge Gorge World Heritage site are about half an hour each by car. The Stoke-on-Trent Potteries, walled city of Chester, Alton Towers theme park, Biddulph Grange (NT), Offa’s Dyke Path on the Welsh border and Housman’s ‘blue remembered hills’ all make an ideal day’s outing.
The owners have restored the cottage with utmost care using high quality materials and have made imaginative use of the available space to provide comfortable and attractive rooms full of unusual features. A special bonus is the 'Urban cedar' hot tub in the garden.
Access along a level track to gravelled approach/parking area. Entrance door into kitchen with solid oak fitted units and granite work tops; dining area. Small, cosy sitting room with woodburner. Steps from kitchen down to passageway with double doors out to the garden. Shower room/wc. Solid wood stairs from kitchen lead directly into a dressing room under the eaves with useful clothes storage space. Low doorway ('mind your head') gives access into the double bedroom. WC with wash basin and vanity unit.
Paved and gravelled garden areas. Feature well with lighting and safety grill. 'Urban cedar' hot tub. Barbecue.
Well what can I say...this place is like no other... we had such a lovely time and in the area in general but its the folly that`s the star of the show. Its everything and more that the brochure describes... cosy ,quaint, beautiful well equipped. The hot tub is to die for. If you live in the city you will never hear perfect quiet... you will here. We have re-booked to come back in September '17 and will probably come back again after that.Guest's review on TripAdvisor, 14 February 2017. 5 of 5 stars.
Romantic, cosy and luxurious
We came here for a few days after our wedding for a "mini-moon". It was ridiculously cute, peaceful, and luxurious. The owners were friendly and popped in to see us and to check on the tub, but mostly they let us get on with it, which was great. It is a lovely quirky cottage - tiny but perfect for two. Just be careful not to bang your head on the low beams upstairs! Everything you could possibly need was catered for: the kitchen was brilliantly stocked with equipment, there were brollies, blankets, films... and of course the hot tub! It was so cosy and tranquil. It's really in the middle of nowhere with cows for company and fields all around. Recommend bringing plenty of food supplies - we got a breakfast hamper provided by the owners which was filled with goodies (although a little on the pricey side). There are some lovely walks in the local area too. I couldn't recommend it enough! We will be back. :-)Guest's review on TripAdvisor, 03 January 2017. 5 of 5 stars.

Beautiful countryside escape
My wife and I visited The Shooting Folly hoping for a tranquil break and it didn't fail to deliver! With beautiful country views and dozens of lovely walks on the doorstep it was just what we needed and, after a long walk, the hot tub was most welcome! The property has been amazingly restored to a very high standard. We certainly intend to return.Guest's review on TripAdvisor, 26 April 2016. 5 of 5 stars.
This is a beautifully restored building set in the middle of nowhere. Excellent kitchen facilities meant we had no need to leave! The snug with wood burner made for a cosy room. The hot tub offered great views in the day and lights at night. A great place for a romantic break and to recharge the batteries!Guest's review on TripAdvisor, 10 February 2016. 5 of 5 stars.
We have just returned from a surprise 50th birthday treat my husband booked for me. I have to say I am very impressed, he could not have found a more perfect place to have a chill out weekend to celebrate. The cottage is delightful with glorious views from all sides. It iss fully equipped for your every need but the icing on the cake has to be the hot tub. We were lucky enough on the 1st night to have clear skies and a full moon, we soaked away for hours enjoying the pure peace and quiet with a bottle of red.......heaven !!!!!!! The cottage has been very tastefully restored and decorated and Steve was just across the field if we needed anything. I would like to say I would NOT like to recommend The Shooting Folly to anybody but purely for selfish reasons, I would love to keep this little gem to myself so we could book whenever we wanted to go but that would be selfish. Everyone should get to sample this little corner of paradise.Guest's review on TripAdvisor, 25 January 2016. 5 of 5 stars.
Very clean and very beautiful
We loved staying here. It is conveniently and thoughtfully laid out. We were able to make meals, relax in comfort, sit outside, sleep well. And it is well away from the noise and hubbub of our usual life. Many thanks.Guests' review on TripAdvisor, 29 August 2015. 5 of 5 stars.
Idyllic getaway to celebrate our 1st wedding anniversary
Perfect setting. Great that there is no Wifi - no distractions from the outside world. Sorry to leave the peace and quiet - would love to come back.Mr and Mrs Platt, August 2015.
Everything We Wanted!
We needed to get away and disconnect. The Shooting Folly was a perfect place for this. Peace and quiet all around us, a wood burning stove and a hot tub! Who could ask for more?!? The surrounding area is beautiful with lots of areas to hike. We had such a wonderful time we're already planning another visit.Guests' review on TripAdvisor, 10 December 2014. 5 of 5 stars.
We stayed here for Easter and really didn't want to leave. The thought that has gone into every part of the Folly is evident everywhere. Small but perfectly formed, everything has been thought of. It is comfortable, well equipped and the perfect place to get away from it all. The addition of the hot tub is excellent and a perfect place to enjoy the peace and quiet. If you want somewhere that is quirky, comfortable and the perfect escape, then you don't need to look any further than here. We will definitely be returning.Guests' review on TripAdvisor, May 14 2014. 5 of 5 stars.
Just wanted to say thank you. The Shooting Folly was as beautiful as it looked. It was perfect for a lovely few days of peace and quiet. The owner was lovely and everything was as it looked from your description....and more. We had a lovely time and will hopefully book with you again at some point in the future. Just wanted to thank you for your help in sorting this out for me at very short notice. Really appreciate it.Mrs Allwood, May 2014
A perfect romantic retreat - fabulous building carefully restored and a warm welcome.
Had a wonderful 4 days at the Folly - we found it to have everything we needed, the snug was perfect on a cold winter evening (and the underfloor heating meant the wood burner was a treat rather than a necessity and feet stayed warm even without slippers!) We found lots to do in the surrounding area (car needed though), the owners were very friendly and welcoming, and the farm tour was a real treat. We would thoroughly recommend a stay here.Guests' review on TripAdvisor, December 2013. 5 of 5 stars.
Perfect way to spend our long weekend and celebrate our engagement.Mr & Mrs Clark, November 2012
A relaxing peaceful location. It has rekindled our hobbies of sketching and writing. Beautiful countryside, beautiful folly.Mr & Mrs Wakefield, September 2012
We have just spent a long weekend at The Shooting Folly in Shropshire. I just wanted to say how lovely the property is - warm and cosy and very, very cute. The owners made us feel very welcome (fresh eggs in a basket) and even popped in to turn up the heating when we were out! Highly recommended and an excellent addition to your properties.Mr & Mrs Thornton, March 2012
