Introduction

What a find this is! The Old School House provides a wonderful opportunity to step back in time and experience what was once the Victorian school house and is now a wonderfully light and extremely spacious holiday home. Many original features combined with high spec. accommodation make this a highly unusual and very special place to stay.

This is the heart of rural South West Dorset, part of an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, with wonderful walks up on Eggardon Hill Fort above the village and across the owner’s land on a 5 mile circular walk, accessed from a footpath at the back of the house. The sea is only 5 miles away at West Bay and a significant stretch of the Jurassic coast from Abbotsbury (Chesil Beach, swannery and sub-tropical gardens) to Lyme Regis (famous cobb, fossils and sandy beach) is within easy driving distance. The county town of Dorchester is 10 miles while, more locally, the market town of Bridport (4 miles) provides good shopping.

Approached by its own long driveway, The Old School House is set in a large garden with a restful outlook across to the centre of the village, the Norman church and one of the two village pubs. The owner has gone to enormous lengths to create a comfortable and welcoming family house – a complete transformation of the original building. The tall, stone mullioned, Gothic windows with their stained glass ‘quatre foil’ sections are a predominant feature and make all the main rooms extremely light and airy. The large sitting/dining room provides a convivial space for large gatherings and the large, private walled garden at the back of the house is perfect for al fresco meals and barbecues.

Accommodation

Entrance up steps from the parking area through utility room to a sunny kitchen with breakfast table. Downstairs hallway with door to the back garden. Huge, very light sitting room with open fire, plenty of comfortable seating and a further door to the back garden. Downstairs wc. Stairs lead to the landing and corridor. Four bedrooms: impressive double height master bedroom with zip & link beds giving a choice of super kingsize double or twin beds and en suite shower room/wc; 2nd bedroom with double bed and en suite bathroom/wc with shower over the bath (NB there is a door to the bathroom from the corridor as well, giving access for the occupants of the other bedrooms); two further bedrooms, one smaller room with a double bed and one with twin beds.

Outside, the entrance drive leads around a large lawn in front of the house to a gravelled parking area. Lovely sunny, very private, walled rear garden with a full-length paved patio (barbecue provided) and a big lawned area beyond.
