On the outskirts of the tiny hamlet of Flaxley in a gated courtyard setting bounded by a stream and with immediate access to the owners’ fields and lake, The Old Mill and The Old Dairy are the very attractive result of much thought and hard work. At right angles to each other, the houses have their own parking and garden area and can be rented individually but are also ideal for larger parties wishing to holiday together: The Old Mill provides large, light living spaces where a party of ten can comfortably gather to eat or just relax.
There is a well-stocked lake in the adjacent meadow for fly-fishing enthusiasts: arrangements and any payment for this will be made directly with the owners. In addition, the whole area provides a wide range of activities. The Royal Forest of Dean is perfect for walking and cycling in the ancient woodlands and a number of water-based sports are available on the River Wye. There are also some spectacular views, for example from the famous Symonds Yat Rock, approx. 15 minutes’ drive away. The Forest’s mining heritage is celebrated in several visitor attractions including the Clearwell caves which are well-worth a visit. The attractive nearby village of Newnham-on-Severn has a post office, pub and store. Further afield, Regency Cheltenham, the cathedral cities of Gloucester, Hereford and Worcester, as well as much of the Cotswolds, are all within the range of a day’s outing.
Both these cottages have been cleverly and imaginatively designed to incorporate interesting architectural features and lavish use of natural materials. The double height, versatile living spaces include some unusual features with special attention to lighting and decor, especially in The Old Mill. Both properties are suitable for guests with some degree of mobility impairment.
Main entrance through French windows to large, light, double height kitchen/dining area with fine woodwork, fully fitted kitchen incl. island unit, dining table with seating for up to 10, plus sofa and TV in double-height sitting area. Corridor leading to secondary entrance and three bedrooms, two doubles (one with en suite shower room/wc) and one twin bedroom. Separate bathroom/wc with shower over bath. Stairs from corridor, with clever concealed low-level lighting, leading to large upstairs sitting room with glass wall overlooking the kitchen/dining area. Door out onto a small, glass-fronted balcony with table and chairs.
Outside: large, paved patio area with seating and gas barbecue.
Super accommodation in peaceful setting
Just come back from spending a week at the Old Mill. We usually stay in the Old Dairy but needed more space this year. The layout of the accommodation is first class. All three bedrooms are in the downstairs area. One bedroom has its own en-suite. The upstairs lounge area overlooks the fantastic kitchen which is well equipped. Off the lounge area is a small balcony with seating. From this balcony there are lovely views towards the fields and the lake. A lovely place to sit and read whilst enjoying the peace and quiet. There is the use of a BBQ which we took advantage of using in the sunny weather. A very good welcome pack was left for us by Ben and Kelly the owners. A variety of toys for my grandson to use during our stay was also greatly appreciated. The two dogs Ruby and Buster enjoyed many walks around the fields and lake every day.
Lots of different wildlife to enjoy. In the evenings we could hear tawny owls and barn owls. Apart from the lovely barn we come back to this location as it offers us relaxing and peaceful surroundings with access to many lovely places in the Forest of Dean.Guest's review on TripAdvisor, 12 September 2016. 5 of 5 stars.
Just perfect! You have to stay here!
The Old Mill is just perfect. We have just returned from a week's stay and we are so pleased we found this place. You really won't be disappointed if you stay here! The owners Ben & Kelly were great, so helpful and accommodating. We had contacted with them a couple of times before our holiday and nothing was too much trouble. We were met by Ben on arrival and his introduction to the property was great. The welcome pack was just so kind & thoughtful, we really appreciated it. The property is well equipped and perfectly caters for children. This is a beautiful, peaceful, safe location. It's a perfect location for visiting so many places. We went to Gloucester, Cotswolds- Bibury (beautiful!!), Burford, Bourton-on-the-Water and Stow-on-the-World, all worth a visit - can't beat the Cotswolds. We also went to to Cotswold Park Farm, great day out for the kiddies, highly recommended! We also went on the GWR steam train trip too, again definitely recommended. To eat out locally, we can certainly say both The Red Hart in Blaisdon and The White Hart in Newnham were super! Good food, very friendly and accommodating. Make sure you are hungry though! Ben and Kelly, thank you again and hopefully we'll be back one day!Guest's review on TripAdvisor, 29 May 2016. 5 of 5 stars.

The place was perfect in every way; the owners left us everything to make a perfect break. We will definitely go again. Highly recommend a visit.Guest's review on TripAdvisor, December 23 2015. 5 of 5 stars.
A superb holiday
The standard of the property was outstanding. The Old Mill had been refurbished to a very high level with excellent workmanship throughout. On arrival we were met by Ben who showed us round and how everything worked. A comprehensive welcome pack was provided. The surrounding area is beautiful with lots of things to do and see. Facilities are suitable for all ages. We visited the Cotswolds, Bath and Gloucester Docks and Cathedral being our favourites. Altogether a memorable holiday. Added bonus the weather was good.Guest's review on TripAdvisor, September 22 2015. 5 of 5 stars.
Great welcome from the owner Ben. The pictures do not do this place justice. The attention to detail is very impressive. An old building fabulously restored and finished to such a high standard giving a great feeling of luxury. Opening the fridge to find bread, eggs, milk, butter and orange juice and even a bottle of wine to welcome us was terrific. And as for the huge coffee cake....delicious. So many thoughtful touches such as the toiletries, boxes of tissues etc. From the moment we drove through the electric gates and down the driveway to the house we just knew this was something special.Guest's review on TripAdvisor, September 14 2014. 5 of 5 stars.
What a fantastic stay!!
From the moment we steeped in the door we knew that we had found a gem!! A fantastic barn in a beautiful location only made better, by what can best be described as good old English hospitality from Ben and Kelly, who own the barn. The barn was keep impeccably clean throughout our 5 week stay and information on what was on offer in the local area was all on hand. We just had the best time ever!!! Dear Ben and Kelly thanks you so much and we hope to see you guys next summer!! We better book early!!Guest's review on TripAdvisor, September 8 2014. 5 of 5 stars.
We stayed at the Old Mill for a week and had a fabulous time. The property is gorgeous, beautifully decorated and very well equipped. Sort of place you wouldn't mind having a rainy day in - it's so cosy, immaculate and beautiful. Ben and Kelly left a fab welcome pack (which included cake and wine, best welcome pack we've ever had at a holiday rental place) and were very helpful and welcoming. Well kitted out for kids too, with toys, books, plastic plates, cups etc. Ben made my son's day by giving him a ride in the tractor and he was able to watch them making bales. All in all, highly recommend this place - best holiday place we've ever rented and we've been to quite a few. Would definitely go back.Guest's review on TripAdvisor, June 24 2014. 5 of 5 stars.
Stunning Cottage, Gorgeous surroundings. Highly recommend!!
We celebrated my mums 50th here and it was such a great weekend. Ben and Kelly were the perfect hosts, so helpful and even showed us around their farm. The cottage is absolutely perfect for a group of 6. Plenty of cutlery, lovely white towels and modern decor. Its all very well thought out. We used the BBQ 2 nights in a row as we were very lucky with the weather and it was great. Would highly recommend, especially if its for a special Occasion. We loved it and would certainly return.Guest's review on TripAdvisor, May 23 2014. 5 of 5 stars.
Fantastic long weekend
Spent a long weekend here to celebrate a 50th birthday, the place is amazing very well lit in every room and decorated to a very high standard. Highly recommended go ape and canoeing down the river Severn (both about 30 min drive). Tips: its very bright in the morning in the 2 front rooms as the sun rises directly in front, I couldn't sleep past about 6am but a coffee on the balcony in silence watching the sun rise is great. 2.bring bbq utensils.Guest's review on TripAdvisor, May 19 2014. 5 of 5 stars.
Perfect, tranquil spot, amazing hosts...everything you could ask for!
I booked the Old Mill for the first bank holiday weekend in May. It seemed the perfect place to take my wife and son, sister-in-law and her family, and my father-in-law to celebrate my wife's 30th birthday. The Old Mill sits in an enclosed compound which sits on a very large acreage in a hamlet named Flaxley. Given my sister-in-law has a two-year-old daughter, it was a perfect place for her to run about without us having to worry about what she was up to. When she fell backwards off a picnic bench and smacked her head off the stone pavement the owner, Ben, brought a small child's bench for her to use. We also arrived back from a few long walks to find extra toys awaiting us, which I believe is conduct above and beyond. Ben and Kelly were the most accommodating and inviting hosts and I can't say enough about them. I suppose mentioning that we will be making the Old Mill an annual weekend away should suffice. If you have a family and want a safe, beautiful place to get away I can't recommend it highly enough.Guests' review on TripAdvisor, 9 May 2014. 5 of 5 stars.
Does what it says on the tin!
Excellent facilities in spotless condition, it certainly has a wow factor!! The layout of the building works really well for groups and families having a get together. The kitchen is well equipped and the grounds and walks available from the Mill were an added bonus. There is so much to see and do in the area to keep everybody happy. Can not praise it enough, just go and try it yourself!Guests' review on TripAdvisor, 19 October 2013. 5 of 5 stars.
Fantastic cottage and location for 30th birthday celebrations
We can't recommend this cottage highly enough. The Old Mill was beautifully designed, spotlessly clean, and ideal for our needs. We were a group of 6 adults, a 2 year old and a 7 month old. The owners were extremely helpful and accommodating and we were delighted with the equipment provided for the children (2 cots, 2 high chairs and a chest full of toys). Each room was beautifully decorated and finished to a high standard. The bedrooms were all on the ground floor. The bathrooms we again spotlessly clean, and extra toiletries (shampoo, conditioner etc) were also provided. The main downstairs living area was more than big enough for all of us, and we were able to spill out outside onto the benches and grass. The large table would easily seat 10, and creates a really sociable area. Upstairs is a lovely sofa area with large TV and little balcony. We enjoyed spending the evenings chatting upstairs (without disturbing the children sleeping downstairs). We walked over to the large lake and enjoyed watching the swans. Thank you for a lovely weekend!Guest's review on TripAdvisor, 20 May 2013. 5 of 5 stars
A lovely relaxing week in a stunning property and location, very comfortable and well equipped. Appreciated the welcome pack and didn't want for anything. A great place to stay, thank you.Mr & Mrs Cooper, February 2013
We had a beautiful stay here for our yearly reunion, such lovely buildings and so pretty in the snow! The kitchen is perfect for a big group dinner and we all LOVE the lights above the table! Thanks.Mr & Mrs Ivens, January 2013
What a beautiful well equipped cottage! As the first guest "guinea pigs", would it live up to the lovely pictures on the website? It certainly did, we felt at home immediately and loved the lake and stream to splash about in.Mr & Mrs Edwards, November 2012
