Introduction

Dating back to 1720, this Grade II listed cottage has been lavishly modernised and harmoniously extended to provide accommodation of an exceptional standard, graded 4 stars, Gold Award by Visit England. Formerly the gardener's cottage to an historic moat house, it lies within the grounds of the owners' house, in the ancient settlement of Britford, 3 miles to the south of the cathedral city of Salisbury, amidst the Avon Valley water meadows.

Within a 15 minute drive is the northern perimeter of the New Forest National Park and a little over half an hour's drive, following the River Avon on its journey south, is Christchurch on the Dorset coast. Visitor attractions in the surrounding area are numerous; there are houses and gardens of great beauty - Wilton House, Breamore, Heale House, Longleat, Stourhead - as well as Britain's most famous prehistoric monument, the World Heritage site of Stonehenge. A short drive or 15 minute walk along the tow path from Britford is medieval Salisbury with its magnificent 13th century cathedral and cathedral close, Charter market place and extensive range of shops, pubs, pavement café's and restaurants. The city also has a leisure centre with indoor swimming pool, theatre and arts centre. In May it hosts an international Arts Festival. Britford itself is fortunate in having a superb farm shop, just 100 yards from the cottage, where locally produced and sourced Wiltshire produce is available.

Renovating a Grade II listed cottage in a conservation village is a major project and The Moat Cottage is no exception. The owners have been at pains to preserve the original character & features while providing 21st century, 'state-of-the-art' living amenities. At The Moat Cottage you will find not only carefully restored original brickwork, small pane windows, original internal shutters, and exposed beams and timberwork but also under floor heating, top of the range kitchen and bathroom appliances, traditionally made George Smith furniture and Porta Romana lamps.

Accommodation

Sleeping up to 6, The Moat Cottage offers versatile accommodation, with two bathrooms, two sitting rooms and a big 'dining' kitchen, with its specially made glazed folding doors opening out onto a paved terrace and large garden beyond.

Entrance hallway with study area. Main sitting room with open fireplace containing a woodburning stove. 2nd sitting/TV room. Kitchen/dining room with Welsh slate worktops and flooring, and large elm tressle table for dining. Adjacent utility room. Downstairs bathroom/wc. with separate shower cubicle. Two staircases, one leading to a double bedroom with 5ft bed and a bathroom/wc with separate shower cubicle, and the second (original enclosed staircase) to two double height bedrooms, one with an antique walnut double bed and original elm floor and the other with twin beds.

The Moat Cottage's garden is a feature in itself. Enclosed by the original kitchen garden brick wall and 'sheep' hurdles and with its own outdoor lighting system, it has a large paved terrace with elm tressle table and 'Moroccan' lanterns, ideal for al fresco dining. Weber barbecue provided.

What our guests say

Everything about it was wonderful!

We booked Moat Cottage to celebrate my mother's 70th birthday because she loved living in the same cottage and Britford village when she was a child. It was wonderful - the cottage has been carefully extended to provide a modern kitchen and bathrooms yet retains the original cottage layout, features and charm. She was thrilled. We had lots of fun re-creating photos of our family at the cottage 70 years ago with our family today! We arrived late in the evening but the owners had ensured that the cottage was warm and fully prepared. The kitchen is very well equipped - we wanted for nothing. The garden is lovely and I imagine would be great for a barbecue on a summer's day with the kitchen open to the garden. Britford is still a beautiful and unspoilt village, the Saxon church is just along the lane and Robert's Farm Tea Shop just a short stroll away is also lovely. We felt as if we had stepped back in time by 100 years but with all the home comforts of today. Compliments to the owners for taking such care over everything.

Guest's review on TripAdvisor, 21 November 2016. 5 of 5 stars.

The Moat Cottage was fantastic; we all had such a great time and left with heavy hearts. If you could pass on our thanks to the owners I would be grateful. Fabulous cottage and we will definitely return.
