Introduction

Standing on its own in secluded surroundings on the edge of the pretty village of Coombe Bissett, The Garden Apartment at Shutts House has an instantly welcoming feel. The owners, who live in the upper part of the house with a completely separate entrance on the other side, have converted the lower level into an ultra-contemporary space with beautiful floors and furnishings and a very high level of luxury throughout. The large living area and the main bedroom both have huge sliding windows giving straight on to the very private terrace and the lawns beyond.

Although on the outskirts of the village, its slightly elevated position gives this house an air of rural tranquillity but it is in fact only two miles south of Salisbury with its famous cathedral, ancient buildings, wide range of shops and cafes and perhaps the finest Close in the country. Situated at the eastern end of the much sought after Chalke Valley, the house is also perfectly located for exploring this outstanding region. Nearby are several ‘green lanes’, once drove roads and now affording wonderful walks and rides, and only a little further afield is the Cranborne Chase, a former royal hunting ground consisting of magnificent stands of trees interspersed with fields and open land, with some tremendous views towards the coast in the far distance.

The New Forest is also easily reached, a favourite destination where ponies (and pigs in Autumn) roam freely. Classic car enthusiasts should not miss a visit to the National Motor Museum at Beaulieu. Not far beyond is the Jurassic Coast with spectacular cliff walks and fine beaches. The whole region also contains many superb stately homes, gardens and historic monuments such as Wilton House, Stourhead and Stonehenge; the Georgian city of Bath is an interesting destination for a day’s visit.

An important part of any outing will be returning at the end of the day to relax in the peaceful, secluded garden and enjoy the almost Mediterranean effect of the luxurious outdoor furniture and discreet lighting – a magical experience.

Accommodation

Entrance from parking area and terrace in front of the house to a small, stylish hall. Very large living room with lovely tiled floor (partly carpeted), ample comfortable seating and woodburner. Sliding windows open on to the terrace and lawn. The fitted luxury kitchen at the rear has built-in ovens (one a combination conventional/microwave) and induction hob. The ‘feature’ dining table seats 6. The largest of the three bedrooms is beyond the living room with zip & link beds offering a choice of super kingsize double or twin beds, smart television and sliding doors to the terrace, plus an en suite bathroom/wc with stand-alone bath and large separate shower. Two further bedrooms open from the hall, one with zip & link beds (super kingsize double or twin beds) and one with kingsize double bed. Both these bedrooms are luxuriously carpeted and have smart televisions, and both have a very contemporary ensuite shower room/wc. There is a utility room off the hall.

Outside, the large terrace has all-year furniture including a large table with built-in LED lighting and further comfortable seating on the lawn. A large tree can be gently illuminated. Charcoal barbecue.

What our guests say

Can't wait to stay again!

This is by far the best holiday cottage we have rented (and we have stayed in quite a few!), the luxurious interior design and facilities were second to none. Lizzie (owner) has definitely thought of everything, we couldn't believe the amount of facilities and equipment available, even spare toothpaste and toothbrushes (which came in handy for our forgetful 16year old!). As we have a 1yr old and our friends staying with us for a few nights have a 3yr old, we were so impressed that there were even age appropriate toys and games for them, along with a few kiddy treats in the fabulous welcome hamper, which also included some freshly laid eggs the next day!

With 3 large double bedrooms with ensuites, there is plenty of space for everyone and the living/kitchen and dining area is a great space to spend time together. However the most amazing space is the outside garden area, which is furnished as luxuriously as the interior of the property and is a totally relaxing, private and fabulous space to spend an afternoon or evening, with the children playing safely on the lawn. We enjoyed a couple meals and breakfasts out there and it was just lovely, just wish the weather had been kinder to us so we could have used it more! I have to be honest I was a bit nervous about having the owners living above the property, but I had absolutely nothing to worry about, they couldn't have made us feel more welcome and comfortable and we totally felt we were still in a private house of our own. The location is great for a variety of places to visit, we visited; Peppa Pig World, Longleat Safari Park, Sandbanks, Salisbury town and cathedral, Salisbury & South Wilts golf club. We had some lovely drives out in the countryside along with local lunches out and feel like we only scratched the surface. This is truly a cross between a luxury boutique hotel and a 5 star holiday home, with owners where nothing is too much trouble. We can't wait to stay again!

Fabulous house and hosts

The garden apartment is gorgeous inside and out. Lizzie the owner met us when we arrived and was very helpful throughout our visit. We had a lovely welcome pack on arrival full of local produce including water, milk and juice in the fridge. Molten brown products were available in all bathrooms and plenty of cleaning products provided including washing powder, dishwasher tablets and washing up liquid. In fact Lizzie has thought of everything and you will not want for anything. The garden is lovely and peaceful with lots of lovely lighting at night including fairy lights in the trees which look amazing. Although the owners live above the apartment they are not at all intrusive but are on hand if you need anything. There is a well stocked shop 5 minutes walk away and a good pub with good food in the village about 15 mins walk. We would recommend the Yew Tree for excellent food in Odstock about 3 miles away. The apartment is very luxurious with high quality furnishings and I would highly recommend.
