Introduction

The Carriage House stands at the entrance to an impressive, Grade II listed mansion in the small village of Worton, 6 miles from the attractive market town of Devizes. The house provides an ideal base from which to explore the many attractions of this fascinating part of Wiltshire. The area is rich in prehistoric sites such as Avebury Stone Circle, Silbury Hill and Kennet Long Barrow and is also of interest for its industrial past - Crofton Beam Engines and a working windmill at Wilton. Narrow boat trips can be enjoyed on the nearby Kennet and Avon Canal and there is plenty of good walking on Salisbury Plain with immediate access onto a public footpath from the house. For keen anglers lake fishing is available within walking distance at Mill Farm Fisheries.

The historic towns of Bradford-on-Avon, and Marlborough, well known for their antique shops, pubs and restaurants, are a short drive from Worton, while the Georgian city of Bath, a World Heritage site, the cathedral city of Salisbury and Stonehenge are within half an hour’s drive. Further afield, The Cotswolds and Oxford are within reach for a day’s excursion.

Stylishly decorated and furnished, the accommodation comprises the major part of the former Carriage House, which has been carefully restored by its current owners. There is ample space for a larger group but it is equally suitable for a smaller party for which there is a reduced, small party tariff. Guests will have access to parts of the extensive grounds surrounding the main house, including use of the hard tennis court, the adjoining, secluded, walled garden and former deer park beyond. The main house is of considerable architectural and historical interest. Built in the early 20th century, it was reputedly used by Churchill, Eisenhower and Sikorsky for secret meetings during the 2nd World War.

Wonderful English Cottage

Our family stayed for a week at this charming cottage two weeks before Christmas. When we arrived the Xmas tree was decorated and the cottage was warm and clean. Excellent place to base yourself to explore the area. We travelled to Salisbury, Bath and Devizes for some Xmas shopping. Only 25 minutes to Stonehenge and travelled back to Watford for Harry Potter world. So many places to visit from here we just needed more time. Lucy was always friendly with advice on where to travel too and timing. The cottage was well equipped and there was plenty of room for the party of 5 staying the week. Great place to stay out in the country.

Wish we lived here

Great house. Clean comfortable and homely. Stayed here for our daughters wedding with our other 4 children and some partners and grandchild. Plenty of room, great amenities, log fire, big table to sit around and hosts that have to be experienced to be believed. Lucy and David are special people who go out of their way to make guests stay as enjoyable as possible. Our daughter was lucky enough to have the use of the Eisenhower Bridal Suite in the main house, which is top class luxury, to get ready in. A treat she will never forget. Bridal prep in a house that was used by Churchill, Eisenhower and Sikorski for discussions during world war two does not happen for everyone. Lucy and David facilitated this and we are most grateful.

English hospitality at its best!

Lucy and David, our hosts, went out of their way to make sure everything ran smoothly for our large and constantly changing group. The cottage is beautifully decorated but also highly functional with two bathrooms and a modern, well-equipped kitchen. We had unfettered access to their park-like garden and tennis court, and could (and did!) call on them frequently to borrow the BBQ or larger pots for the kitchen, get advice about trains and local transport and Lucy often left produce from her garden on our doorstep knowing we had a crowd to feed! The location is brilliant; the younger adults in our party had a nightcap most nights at the very authentic old English pub across the road, and we had many walks and bicycle rides through the charming countryside on quiet roads and byways. Devizes, with a wonderful open air market on a Thursday am, as well as all the usual supermarkets and shops (including bicycle hire at the garden Centre) was a 10 minute drive away and the historic cities of Bath, Salisbury and Winchester were all an easy drive away. So, a very happy fortnight was had by all, and I am looking forward very much to returning!

Charming, cosy and clean - a wonderful holiday cottage

The Carriage House is an absolutely delightful holiday rental with everything you need for a self catering holiday. We were four family members but the cottage would easily have catered for more people. The fully equipped kitchen has plenty of well appointed crockery, cutlery, glassware and cooking utensils and the beds and bedding were very clean and comfortable. The lounge/diner is light, cosy and very attractive. There was excellent wi-fi reception. We stayed for a week and I would say that a car is essential to explore the many areas of interest. We visited the Caen Hill Locks on the Kennet and Avon canal, Avebury stone circles and also went to Bath, Swindon and Salisbury. We were also lucky enough to have an afternoon at Salisbury races. The owners, Lucy and David were lovely hosts and have evidently put much effort into ensuring guests have a very comfortable stay. We were all very pleased and I would definitely recommend to anyone wanting a relaxed, clean, comfortable holiday rental.

Wonderfully relaxing Easter away with friends

Whilst we are regular hirers of holiday cottages, this was a relatively “last-minute” booking after we decided that we could do with getting away over the Easter period. Since close friends of ours had been having the same idea, we decided to collaborate. We were warmly welcomed by both Lucy and David on arrival and Lucy showed us around the property. They had left us Easter eggs for the children (a nice touch) and a bottle of their own homemade apple juice (which I have to say was the best I’ve ever tasted). David had prepared the fireplace in the living room ready for lighting, which went down extremely well on a rainy Easter Sunday afternoon. There were 7 guests in our party; 4 adults and 3 young children and the property comfortably accommodated us. The living room was spacious enough for us all, yet still had a cosy feel. The kitchen was small but perfectly adequate for our needs. All the rooms were nicely furnished and the beds were good and comfy. In terms of location we enjoyed trips out to the Caen Locks in Devizes and the Avebury Stone Circle about 20 minutes away. The city of Bath was only a short hop by car and we broke our journey home via Dyrham Park. The very pretty National Trust property of Stourhead was about a 45 minute drive South West of Worton, on the outskirts of Mere village.

Wonderful, charming, very "English" cosy cottage

We rented the cottage for Christmas and New Year with extended family travelling from various countries to be with 96 year old mother. We required that her bedroom be on ground floor with bathroom and easy access to living room and dining. All this was achieved and more. The three bedrooms upstairs were configured to our needs and worked perfectly as we had one bedroom with two single beds that worked very well as we had different guests staying various nights and the owners were very good in supplying extra bed linen etc. As it was Christmas, festivities with the turkey and ham lunch a must the kitchen fulfilled all the needs to turn out a gourmet meal - the same for New Year which was several roast ducks. The owners Lucy and David had decorated the cottage for Christmas and had a most lovely tree to receive all the presents beneath. A lovely welcome basket of home-made goodies awaited us and I must say that David's shortbread biscuits were amazing as well as his plum jam.

The only drawback is that the pub across the road is in a period of change so we had to drive to partake in a pint but with so many great pubs within a few miles that was not a hardship. Although winter it was still pretty easy to take walks along various public paths with lovely aspects.

We would highly recommend this cottage to anyone who wants a relaxing self-catered holiday although there are some very good eating places in easy striking distance and if you want to explore, it is a 30 minute drive to Bath.

Lovely holiday cottage

We stayed here for a week with 3 generations. Visited Legoland, Stonehenge, Avebury, Longleat, Caen Hill Locks and more. Great situation for visiting Wiltshire and a lovely cottage to stay in. We were very warmly welcomed on our arrival with fresh flowers throughout the house. The house has everything we needed and was warm and comfortable. Thank you!

Fantastic long weekend in this lovely cottage

Very well appointed, charming, comfortable, squeaky-clean, characterful, with really comfy new beds - The Carriage House has it all! The owner was away when we arrived, but had arranged for a friend to stay in the cottage next door to show us around and look after us. There were flowers in all the rooms, she made us some delicious scones, and was there to answer any queries. We enjoyed playing tennis on the court in the extensive gardens, and lit the lovely log fire at night. Beautiful countryside, lovely walks, and easy to visit Avebury, Stonehenge, West Kennet Long Barrow and many other interesting places from here. We would all like to have stayed longer!

Luxury cottage with all you need for a great stay

What a wonderful stay we had. A very luxury, very well equipped cottage with all you need. Safe location, plenty of space outside, very private and great, helpful hosts. Nice bedrooms with good cupboard space and perfect bathrooms. Wi-Fi worked perfectly. We had a great time, explored the area, one of the best places we stayed in in the UK. Big thumbs up.
