Introduction

On the edge of the charming village of Martin, the most westerly parish in Hampshire, “Pippin” and “Russet” are the very appealing result of a thoughtfully planned conversion from a former farm building. Graded 4 stars by Visit England, the cottages stand in the owner’s grounds, some distance away from the main house and offer ample privacy to their guests. They can be rented individually but are also very suitable for a larger group wishing to holiday together, with a self-contained, communal “barn” in between the two cottages providing an ideal space where larger parties can comfortably gather to eat or just relax.

Communal barn/games room

In between Russet and Pippin there is a large communal barn comprising a sitting area with woodburning stove, a games area with pool table, a dining area and a fully equipped fitted kitchen with gas hob, electric oven, dishwasher and fridge/freezer. There is a separate shower room/wc. The barn is available, at no extra cost, to all guests using either cottage. When Russet and Pippin are booked jointly, the long pine refectory table will comfortably seat up to 10 guests, making the space ideal for large get-togethers and special celebrations. On these occasions, an extra two guests can, if required, be accommodated in the barn using the double sofa bed available, for which the cost is £250 per week or £200 per short break.

The area surrounding Sweet Apples Barn offers some stunning countryside in the Cranborne Chase Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, with excellent opportunities for walking, riding and cycling. The ‘no through’ lane on which the cottages are situated, leads directly up to Martin Down, a large area of chalk downland, designated a National Nature Reserve, which supports a huge range of wild flowers, birds and butterflies. The country road leading south out of the village, will take you to the small country town of Fordingbridge on the banks of the River Avon and beyond that to the New Forest National Park boundary, about 15 minutes’ drive from Martin.

Further afield but within easy driving distance for a day’s outing are the beaches of the South Hampshire and Dorset coastline and a plethora of attractions – Stonehenge, Stourhead Gardens, Longleat Safari Park, the World Heritage city of Bath and the cathedral cities of Winchester and Salisbury, the latter being only about 20 minutes’ drive. Martin itself lies in a valley, the main street lined with period houses and picturesque thatched cottages. There is a community village shop with restricted opening hours and a church of Norman origins.

Location

What our guests say

Perfect quiet country retreat

The cottage we had was Russet, placed just on the edge of the New Forest and it enjoys a very quiet and tranquil setting. The cottage itself is very well equipped and spotless throughout. The little touches made it a 'Home from Home' from a welcome package upon arrival to the thoughtful basket of essentials that you always forget to bring or buy e.g. olive oil, spices and other niceties to garnish your cooking there. As a family of four we found it an ideal place to stay along with the location. Both the New Forest and the main road to Salisbury are within easy reach. We hope to visit again in the not too distant future.

Great location and great cottage

This is a lovely barn conversion that caters for all your holiday needs. It's truly a home from home. The cottage is well presented, clean and has a lovely homely feel. The homemade cake on arrival was very welcome! The area is lovely. We went on some lovely walks. We will definitely return to the Russet.

Perfect Stay

Great, quiet place to stay in a chocolate box village. Cottage very comfortable with all the amenities of home. Private, small garden perfect for relaxing and listening to the birds chorus in the morning or evening. Clean and welcoming, could not fault it in any way. Look forward to returning on later visits to Hampshire. We stayed with our two year old daughter and small dog, all had a good time.

Highly recommended

Just got home from a fantastic few days in Russet. Lovely warm, comfortable, beautiful little cottage. Lovely cake on arrival. Ideal for days out, so peaceful in a really sweet little village just 15 minutes outside Salisbury. We loved the big, deep bath....Bliss! Would highly recommend. Thank you so much!

Great Location, Beautiful Cottage

We stayed in Russet over Xmas for the 2nd consecutive year. It's a beautiful, quiet, cottage in a lovely location. Set in the pretty village of Martin, it provides a remote feeling but is close enough to Fordingbridge for supplies (co-op, tesco etc). Just 20 mins (roughly) to the New Forest and yet still close to Salisbury if you want city life. The owners get the personal touch just right; there if you need them but otherwise they leave you to enjoy your holiday. The middle cottage is great if you're in a bigger party or just fancy a game of pool. Very well stocked kitchen with everything you'd need. Cosy flooring (heated) and the log fire warms the whole cottage within minutes. A little gem :)

I have just got back from a brilliant weekend at Russet. I completely forgot to write in the visitors' book, but just wanted to say how lovely and peaceful it was. Russet was a lovely clean open space living with plenty of room. Thank you so much for a great time. Would definitely recommend to friends and family.

Perfect!

Gorgeous cottage just recently renovated. Everything you could possibly ask for and more. Homemade cake on arrival. 'Bits and Bobs' basket with essentials provided. Lovely beds and bedding (important to me!). Don't let the idea of sleeping on the sofa bed put you off - it's very comfortable and big. Large clean bathroom. Good base for exploring New Forest. Lovely view of the paddock with ponies. Shared games room an excellent bonus. BBQ available. Fenced off outside area. Can't fault anything really.

Simply perfect

Have just returned from a wonderful stay at Russet, with our dog and 15 month old daughter. Absolutely delighted on our arrival by the cottage, its location, our "neighbours" the sheep and the delicious homemade cake. A well planned, well equipped and very comfortable cottage in a simply lovely setting. Would definitely recommend and would definitely book again should we return to the New Forest.

Ideal for extended family celebrations!

Four families came to celebrate our silver and my sister's Ruby wedding anniversaries. The two separate cottages and barn accommodated all 11 of us, with the use of two put-u-up settees. We used the dining and kitchen area of one of the cottages for the children to eat and it meant that there was still some living space for other adults wanting a retreat! The children loved to watch the farm animals, but were a little wary of the dogs! Each cottage is well equipped as is the barn, with TV's in the cottages but not in the main barn. The barn area has a lovely long table and benches allowing us all to share the days activities with our meals, but perhaps one small point is that sitting 8 adults on the sofa was a bit cosy! The position of the cottages gives you easy easy access to the sea and all that you find in the New Forest. The owner provided an additional service of a three course meal to end our celebrations, which I would highly recommend. This was a perfect retreat for a lovely family celebration. Thanks to Cathy, the owner for all your help to make this a most enjoyable stay.
