On the outskirts of the small village of Leigh amid rural surroundings, this delightful, Grade II listed, part-thatched stone cottage has been beautifully restored by its owners with exceptional attention to detail. Its location six miles south of Sherborne makes it ideal as a base for exploring this diverse and attractive area which has an almost limitless number of places of interest. Stately homes such as Montacute, Stourhead (equally famous for its gardens) and Barrington Court are not far away; Sherborne with its ancient abbey and two castles, and Georgian Blandford are well worth visiting, as are Dorchester, Shaftesbury and – slightly further afield – Salisbury with its magnificent cathedral.
The active holidaymaker is especially well-catered for. Leigh is at the centre of an enormous network of footpaths and cycleways: one of the prettiest paths runs beside the cottage to the nearby village of Chetnole and its award-winning pub. The beautiful Jurassic Coast, with its superb cliff walks and beaches, is about 40 minutes away by car. The owners provide comprehensive information and detailed routes for walkers to take with them.
Guests arriving at Pound Farm Cottage will immediately feel at home. Although close to the owners’ farmhouse, it has its own drive and parking area and the entrance is from the garden at the back of the property giving ample privacy inside and out. Great care has been expended on altering and renovating the cottage to give a light and contemporary feel within whilst preserving many original features dating from the early eighteenth century. Some of the windows frame the exceptional views over fields and woodland to distant hills, and sitting outside in the peaceful garden at the end of the day will be one of the highlights of any stay in this tranquil place.
Entrance via porch from the garden at the back of the cottage into a spacious, very practical utility/boot room. Sitting room with original inglenook containing an electric 'woodburning-effect' stove; long views across the garden to the hills beyond. Passageway with access to the front door of the cottage. Spacious, fitted kitchen with oak worktop, dresser and dining area. Luxury bathroom/wc with free-standing, roll-top bath, separate corner shower, basin and heated towel rail. Unusual and attractive wood-effect ceramic floor throughout downstairs. Open, carpeted stairs with banister from sitting room straight into a double bedroom with kingsize bed and a low window affording long views across the countryside.
Outside: long, private, lawned garden at the back of the cottage and views from the far end.
"As lovely as before" - Another year on and Pound Farm Cottage is as lovely as before. Mike and Diana were great hosts even when I cooked the kettle on the hob! Having stayed in a few cottages now this really is the best equipped holiday cottage. We both hope they will have us back next year.Lisa & Matt, December 2017.
Charming cottage in Dorset countryside
The cottage is in a lovely location and is beautifully furnished and equipped as well as being very comfortable. The owners are very helpful and the cottage contains a wealth of information on local amenities and events as well as maps. It is also very well placed for visiting Dorchester and Sherborne as well as further afield and is also close to a number of good pubs and eating places. We would have no hesitation in recommending Pound Farm Cottage and hope to stay again.Guest's review on TripAdvisor, 24 December 2016. 5 of 5 stars.

We thoroughly enjoyed our break in this lovely charming cottage, starting with a welcome tea and scones with jam and clotted cream provided by the owners. They were very welcoming and offered any assistance if needed without being obtrusive. The cottage itself was spotlessly clean and comfortably furnished. Mike and Diana have recently renovated the cottage to an amazing standard. Everything we needed was on hand including leaflets on where to go and what to do in the surrounding vicinity. The bed was so comfortable, we found it hard to get up in the morning, although the thought of all the places to see was enough to entice us! We definitely recommend a stay, in fact, we can't wait to go again!Guest's review on TripAdvisor, 12 November 2016. 5 of 5 stars.
Lovely Charming Country Cottage
What a lovely charming country Cottage! We thoroughly enjoyed our stay, starting with a welcoming tea and scones! We visited The Chetnole Inn several times, be it for lunch and dinner and can recommend it - especially the chocolate brownies which were to die for! We would love to visit again and will be recommending our stay to our friends and family.Nicky & Faiz, November 2016
A real little gem!
Having stayed in holiday cottages before we have to say this was the very best. The village and surrounding countryside is really beautiful. The local Chetnole Inn is about a mile or so easy walking from the cottage and as we ate there three times during our weeks stay it's safe to assume the food there was excellent. Great atmosphere and nothing too much trouble. The real pleasure was the torch lit walk back to the cosy cottage. As with everything else the owners provide torches, along with a lovely cream tea welcome on arrival. Local walks and info was also provided and these proved really useful. We give 5 stars for cleanliness & decor and even though the owners are just next door we felt they respected our privacy. Just excellent all round.Guest's review on TripAdvisor, 07 October 2016. 5 of 5 stars.
Beautifully quiet and wonderful cottage
We had a wonderful week in Dorset helped by the great weather and the lovely Pound Farm Cottage. Clean, tastefully decorated and a nice quiet location within easy reach of the beaches and the surrounding countryside for some great walks - hottest day of the year spent walking across the Golden Cap at Seatown with fantastic views.Guest's review on TripAdvisor, 04 September 2016. 5 of 5 stars.
Delightful cottage and lovely helpful owners. If houses are your thing, dont' miss Athelhampton - pure magic and great lunch. For gardens the gem is Mapperton - probably the best garden in England. The sourdough bread from Evershot Bakery is excellent. The Chetnole is the best - the specials were great. Many thanks for creating this little gem in Leigh.Mr & Mrs Gibson, September 2016
We've had a great week - helped no end by the wonderful weather. Wonderful cottage, lovely and quiet and relaxing. We've had some good walks with great pubs at the end. Thanks.Mr & Mrs Mccarthy, August 2016
We had a great week at Pound Farm Cottage. The cottage is beautifully decorated and has everything that is needed for a comfortable home from home - Diana, the owner has thought of everything and more. The cream tea on arrival was much appreciated. The cottage is next door to the owners house but we didn't see them until our last day but we knew they were there if we needed them - just how we like it! Would highly recommend!Guest's review on TripAdvisor, 01 August 2016. 5 of 5 stars.
Just spent a week at Pound Farm Cottage, Leigh, Dorset. Everything about the experience was superb. The cottage is very comfortable and has been beautifully renovated. Our host was very friendly and attentive. Our thanks to her and you for a very excellent week. I would recommend it to anyone.Mr Masterman, June 2016
Despite the weather, we have enjoyed our week in Dorset. Sherborne is a real gem. Would particularly recommend a trip to the coast and lunch at The Hive Cafe. We found this pretty cottage to be really comfortable and a good base for exploring this beautiful part of the country.Mr & Mrs Mullen, June 2016
Just spent a great week at this beautiful cottage. Diana had left one of her delicious cream teas which was much appreciated. Diana and Mike are delightful, friendly hosts - it was more like having lovely neighbours! Nothing was too much trouble for them. A week wasn't enough - so much to see down here! Will be back.Mr & Mrs Snowden, June 2016
Friendly and very helpful hosts who show a really genuine welcome. Weather was chilly for April but we found the cottage to be cosy and comfortable. We appreciated the provision of OS Maps to assist our walk planning. There are some very good food pubs nearby: Chetnole Inn,The Acorn (Evershot) and the New Inn (Cerne Abbas). We visited Minterne Gardens which we enjoyed and walked through Melbury Park.Mr & Mrs Dutson, April 2016
We stayed at Pound Farm cottage whilst over from Norway. The cottage is gorgeous - really spacious for two. Diana was there to meet us but was only on hand if needed - the perfect balance. It is by far the best equipped cottage we have ever stayed in and I just wish we could have stayed longer... We will definitely return - hopefully in the summer when we can make the most of the lovely private garden! Peter and Janette, NorwayGuest's review on TripAdvisor, 12 March 2016. 5 of 5 stars.
Thank you for a lovely relaxing stay in your beautiful cottage. So comfortable and cosy - all mod cons. Enjoyed the cream tea that was waiting too - just the thing after a long journey. Very friendly and helpful hosts, hope to see you again. Now planning our escape to Dorset!!Mr & Mrs Janes, March 2016
Thought of everything...
My husband and I stayed with our 6 month old daughter at the same time as Storm Imogen swept through! The welcome from Diana was great and included a run through of the all important heating controls and a delicious cream tea! The cottage itself is immaculate. It is warm, quiet and everything works. The kitchen is well stocked and had all the scales/measuring jugs required for us to fully enjoy Shrove Tuesday with stacks of pancakes! There was even a vast array of plastic tableware for our tiny traveller. Diana does have a cot and high chair as well which she offered us. We foolishly decided to pack our own, however next time we will save that space in the car!! I can personally vouch for the quality of the washing machine and tumble dryer as we unsurprisingly used them on a daily basis. Diana even provides detergent which, if we had known, would have saved us even more space in the car! The village has a well stocked shop and effectively a bakery run from one of the resident's kitchens! There are plenty of walks in the area - many right from the front door. The nearest pub (The Chetnole Inn) is a short stroll and well worth a visit. There is a folder in the cottage with enough tourist information leaflets to entertain for a year! Diana is on hand as needed, but leaves you your own devices otherwise - a perfect balance. She even offered to babysit one evening for us. She, and the cottage, far exceeded expectations...Guest's review on TripAdvisor, 27 February 2016. 5 of 5 stars.
A cosy Christmas retreat
We stayed at Pound Cottage for a week over the Christmas period. Despite gale-force winds and storms the cottage was cosy and warm. It is very tastefully decorated, spacious for two people and well equipped. All in all it was a perfect place to get away from our busy lives. There are some lovely walks right from the cottage across rolling Dorset Countryside - but don't forget your wellies. We highly recommend it!Guest's review on TripAdvisor, 03 January 2016. 5 of 5 stars.
Wow immaculate cottage with a warm welcome
Fabulous cottage which was away from it all over New Year. The cottage was spotless, well thought out and beautifully finished. Diana greeted us with a warm welcome and a cream tea, what more can you ask for!Guest's review on TripAdvisor, 02 January 2016. 5 of 5 stars.
Pound Farm Cottage is superb
We decided to book a last minute break away and found Pound Farm Cottage on the Hideaways website. As we carried on browsing we somehow kept returning to pound farm - what an omen! We booked for 3 nights, 21st to 24th November. On arrival we were met by Diana, the delightful owner who welcomed us into the cottage with a lovely cream tea. The cottage is of a very high standard, tastefully decorated, the rooms are spacious (even more so than depicted on the Hideaways website) and the situation is lovely. Access to the many delights of Dorset is just a bonus. Unfortunately time, or lack of it, dictated that we could only manage a couple of walks and a visit to the lovely town of Sherborne. We would definitely recommend Pound Farm Cottage to everyone and offer a sincere thank you to Diana.Guest's review on TripAdvisor, November 30 2015. 5 of 5 stars.
An ideal hideaway with to all you might need.
This cottage has been very carefully converted into a delightfully cosy retreat. We were made very welcome and felt very comfortable.Guest's review on TripAdvisor, November 2 2015. 5 of 5 stars.
This Cottage is PERFECT
My wife and I had the privilege of spending a week at Pound Farm Cottage and what a marvellous experience. We are Australians who have travelled the world for most of the last 13 years and have spent a lot of time in self-contained accommodation. We can say, without reservation, that this was the best.
The cottage was recently refurbished and in fact we were just the second guests. The cottage has been turned into a beautiful and comfortable place that is just like a “home away from home”. The cottage is set on a farm but is fully private even having its own driveway and parking area. Diana was a most wonderful host. Nothing was too difficult and she offered excellent advice on the area and what to do. The cottage is simply perfect for a couple. The bed was particularly comfortable; the bathroom was perfect with the best shower in the UK! The kitchen is very large and includes everything that anyone could possibly need. The lounge room is excellent with a new quality television. The Wifi was perfect with an excellent signal. The cottage even has its own private garden/sitting area.
The area has many things to see and experience. We went to Lyme Regis, Sherborne, Dorchester, Shaftesbury, Salisbury and could have gone to many other places, all within an hour or so drive. Bath is less than 2 hours away. There are scores of beautiful walks to be done. There are hundreds of photos waiting to be taken. In terms of “value for money” – this was well worth the cost. For us, it was money very well spent – and we will be back.
Without hesitation, we recommend POUND FARM COTTAGE to the reader. Rod and LynGuest's review on TripAdvisor, October 26, 2015. 5 of 5 stars.
