Introduction

Pop’s Barn (named after the owner’s grandfather) is a secret little retreat hidden behind the High Street in the bustling village of Downton. Reached by a narrow path leading off a side lane, the cottage is revealed as a pretty brick building of obvious antiquity set in a delightful, very private walled garden.

Despite its seclusion, the cottage is perfectly placed for the numerous attractions of this deservedly popular area. Only eight miles south of Salisbury with its magnificent cathedral, ancient buildings and wide range of interesting shops, Downton is also right on the edge of the beautiful New Forest which has an almost limitless array of superb walks and rides, and free-roaming ponies at every turn. Slightly further afield but still easily accessible are the Saxon hilltop town of Shaftesbury, Blandford Forum with its Roman connections, and beautiful stretches of the coast; the South West Coast Path starts in Poole Harbour. Downton itself is a very pleasant village with a good selection of shops and pubs, and the River Avon flowing through the middle.

Pop’s Barn has been well designed to make good use of its small interior spaces and is ideal for two people. Guests will want to make full use of the very pretty and sunny garden, perfect for a peaceful evening drink or al fresco meal.

Accommodation

Entrance from side road via a gate to a narrow passage and steps to a private and attractive garden. An outside door leads straight to the living space with a sofa bed (alternative sleeping only), dining table and kitchen area along the inner wall with an electric cooker and halogen hob. A window overlooks the garden. One step down leads through a curtained opening to a double bedroom and a small en suite shower room/wc.

Outside, brick steps lead up to a paved terrace and a lawned area (astroturf) with borders and a tree, surrounded by high walls and fences which create a sunny and peaceful environment.
