On the edge of the charming village of Martin, the most westerly parish in Hampshire, “Pippin” and “Russet” are the very appealing result of a thoughtfully planned conversion from a former farm building. Graded 4 stars by Visit England, the cottages stand in the owner’s grounds, some distance away from the main house and offer ample privacy to their guests. They can be rented individually but are also very suitable for a larger group wishing to holiday together, with a self-contained, communal “barn” in between the two cottages providing an ideal space where larger parties can comfortably gather to eat or just relax.

Communal barn/games room

In between Russet and Pippin there is a large communal barn comprising a sitting area with woodburning stove, a games area with pool table, a dining area and a fully equipped fitted kitchen with gas hob, electric oven, dishwasher and fridge/freezer. There is a separate shower room/wc. The barn is available, at no extra cost, to all guests using either cottage. When Russet and Pippin are booked jointly, the long pine refectory table will comfortably seat up to 10 guests, making the space ideal for large get-togethers and special celebrations. On these occasions, an extra two guests can, if required, be accommodated in the barn using the double sofa bed available, for which the cost is £250 per week or £200 per short break.

The area surrounding Sweet Apples Barn offers some stunning countryside in the Cranborne Chase Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, with excellent opportunities for walking, riding and cycling. The ‘no through’ lane on which the cottages are situated, leads directly up to Martin Down, a large area of chalk downland, designated a National Nature Reserve, which supports a huge range of wild flowers, birds and butterflies. The country road leading south out of the village, will take you to the small country town of Fordingbridge on the banks of the River Avon and beyond that to the New Forest National Park boundary, about 15 minutes’ drive from Martin.

Further afield but within easy driving distance for a day’s outing are the beaches of the South Hampshire and Dorset coastline and a plethora of attractions – Stonehenge, Stourhead Gardens, Longleat Safari Park, the World Heritage city of Bath and the cathedral cities of Winchester and Salisbury, the latter being only about 20 minutes’ drive. Martin itself lies in a valley, the main street lined with period houses and picturesque thatched cottages. There is a community village shop with restricted opening hours and a church of Norman origins.

The cottages have high spec., very light, tastefully furnished interiors, oak and limestone flooring with underfloor heating and practical, open plan living areas with woodburning stoves. Lovely retreat near the New Forest

We had a wonderful stay at Pippin in Spring half term. Frosty and bitterly cold outside, but with the underfloor heating the children were running around with no socks on inside. The apartment is thoughtfully designed, with lots of space, and a well thought-out kitchen. The area is fantastic for exploring, with masses to do, even in the dead of winter. We had lovely days out in Salisbury, Mudeford, the New Forest and Hengistbury Head. Would love to return one day, hopefully to take advantage of the adjoining property and middle room.

Just perfect!

We have stayed in lots of cottages over the years and I must say that this is definitely one of the best. Everything was very clean and tidy. Everything we wanted was provided. The little kitchen is very well thought out and made cooking a pleasure. In response to a previous review I would just like to say that the extraction hood was clean and worked, the windows sparkled, the washing machine drawer was spotless!!! We all slept like logs every night and were warm and toasty - under floor heating being very effective. Beds very comfortable and the little twin room was perfect for our children (8 & 10) a little dark during the day but we weren't on the doorstep of the New forest to spend the day in bed!! Fantastically located for exploring and very private. WiFi / mobile service was a bit shaky but that suited us as we were enjoying our escape from normal life! We highly recommend these cottages and hope to return with extra family next time so that we can have both cottages and the centre area.

Great family friendly holiday base

We booked both Pippin and Russet for a family holiday. They had everything we needed for a self catering break. The games room shared between cottages was great for the family to wind down in after a busy day visiting the local attractions. The beds were incredibly comfortable, the rooms were easy to keep clean and tidy. The cake on arrival was wonderful. I would recommend both cottages to anyone. Thank you.

Lovely location. The village is like a chocolate box photo. Both cottages were ideal. Will definitely recommend to others. The cake was rather tasty too. Thank you.

No need to look elsewhere...ideal rest & relaxation

Just what we were looking for - clean, comfortable, well equipped, excellent beds, plenty of hot water, underfloor heating, reliable Wi-Fi connection, the list goes on. Arrived to find that the owner Cathy had left us a delicious cake, lovely gesture to start our stay. A great deal of thought has gone into providing all that is needed for you to enjoy a carefree break in peaceful surroundings - you even have use of a games room next door with pool table and facilities to dine in if you wish or you can just sit outside in the private garden, enjoy a drink and use the barbecue provided. Highly recommended - so much so we've extended our stay and by the way, our Labrador couldn't have been happier in this delightful countryside location. Nigel, Angie & Chelsea (the Labrador ! )

Peace and quiet

Nice location away from it all, great cottages with bonus of games room for communal gatherings between two cottages. Well equipped, would stay again. Suited both our 8 yr old daughter and 6 month old puppy, as well as retired in-laws next door!!

Absolutely brilliant. So nice to have found a location where you can chill out the minute you step through the door.

A lovely cottage in a beautiful and tranquil village. A good, central place for visiting many attractions. Thank you for the delicious cake on arrival.

Ideal for extended family celebrations!

Four families came to celebrate our silver and my sister's Ruby wedding anniversaries. The two separate cottages and barn accommodated all 11 of us, with the use of two put-u-up settees. We used the dining and kitchen area of one of the cottages for the children to eat and it meant that there was still some living space for other adults wanting a retreat! The children loved to watch the farm animals, but were a little wary of the dogs! Each cottage is well equipped as is the barn, with TVs in the cottages but not in the main barn. The barn area has a lovely long table and benches allowing us all to share the days activities with our meals, but perhaps one small point is that sitting 8 adults on the sofa was a bit cosy! The position of the cottages gives you easy easy access to the sea and all that you find in the New Forest. The owner provided an additional service of a three course meal to end our celebrations, which I would highly recommend. This was a perfect retreat for a lovely family celebration. Thanks to Cathy, the owner for all your help to make this a most enjoyable stay.
