This very unusual property in a quiet part of Ashburton is reached via one of the narrow passages which are a feature of this small and popular town on the eastern edge of Dartmoor. The former barn has been sympathetically converted to a very high standard and is conveniently located for easy access to the numerous and varied attractions in the area. Ashburton itself, once a Stannary town where tin from the Moorland mines was brought to be assayed (weighed and stamped) has a rich history and many ancient buildings: an archway next to the ironmonger in North Street commemorates an event in 1645 during the Civil War. The town retains the ancient office of Portreeve, dating back to pre-Norman conquest times. In recent years it has acquired a reputation for the quality of its independent shops including an award-winning fish delicatessen, several interesting antique emporia and a nationally-recognised cookery school.

Dartmoor with its tors, rivers and commons is on the doorstep: walks (guided or independent), fishing on the beautiful rivers and streams, pony (and llama!) trekking, climbing and kayaking all take place on this wild and fascinating upland. Slightly further afield, though still within very easy reach, is the famous South Hams which includes the tidal reaches of the River Dart and attractive small towns such as Totnes, Dartmouth and Salcombe (a popular yachting destination) , as well as many picture-postcard villages such as Inner Hope Cove, which featured in the Coronation film in 1963. The South West Coastal Path passes through the region and affords some of the most spectacular scenery to be found throughout its length. Exeter and Plymouth, both full of history and interest, are within a 40-minute drive; and a huge variety of historic sites, houses and gardens are open to the public and provide fascinating destinations for a day’s excursion.

Old Armoury Barn is arranged with the living accommodation upstairs to take advantage of the light and affords comfortable – even luxurious – and contemporary, architect-designed accommodation. The upper floor in particular is impressive; a large, very bright space reminiscent of city loft-living with exceptional quality of design and attention to detail in the joinery of the beams and woodwork, and with a striking outlook over the surrounding roofscape to the countryside beyond. The huge upstairs room is perfectly adapted to a peaceful end-of-day drink and perhaps the creation of an imaginative meal for two!

Entrance from patio/parking area to hallway. Double bedroom with kingsize bed and TV. En suite bathroom/wc with shower attachment to bath. Twin bedroom with TV. Separate shower room/wc. Drying cupboard for coats/boots. Stairs lead directly into a very spacious, light, open-plan room occupying the whole of the first floor. Sitting area with corner woodburner. Large kitchen/dining area at other end with fully-fitted units and separate dining space with solid oak table and chairs.

Outside: small, south-facing patio with attractive wooden planters and metal table/chairs.

What our guests say

Absolutely beautiful place to stay. I loved it - could happily live there. Clean, modern, spacious, well equipped. Everything we needed. Hosts kept a low profile but were friendly, approachable and next door. The two main drawbacks are hopeless wifi (not necessarily their fault) and very narrow access for one car only. Neither of which would stop me awarding 5 stars nor going again! Pubs in Ashburton not great. Try Rugglestones Inn at Wivecombe. Restaurants much better.

An excellent choice for a short break

We stayed here for Christmas and it was everything we wanted and more. The house was extremely clean and very tastefully decorated. We were very impressed with the quality of the equipment. Jacqui and Mark were excellent hosts, they responded immediately to any requests and made us feel very welcome. Ashburton is a lovely town and there is plenty to do in the surrounding area.

Fantastic property for a couple or small family

We rented the Old Armoury Barn in Ashburton for a week just after Christmas. I was travelling with my girlfriend and her daughter, and it perfectly suited our needs. The cottage is a barn conversion, has all mod cons and everything is in good working order. Referred to by the owner as "an upside down house", the bedrooms are located on the ground floor and the upstairs is given over to an open plan kitchen and living/sitting area. The master bedroom has an en suite bathroom whilst the other bedroom is furnished with twin beds and there is a separate bathroom with a walk in shower. Each of the bedrooms has a TV as does the living room, and there is a collection of DVDs and games provided by the owners. The owners themselves are friendly and laid back. Other than meeting them on arrival and again on departure, they did not intrude at all, and yet made it clear that they would be available if we had any problems (they live in the adjoining property). On arrival they had everything looking Christmasy, with a Christmas tree, crackers set on the dining table, and a bottle of Prosecco for us which was a nice touch. The only thing that stops me giving the Old Armoury Barn 5 stars is 1) The access road is narrow - I mean very very narrow - and larger than average vehicles will struggle to get through, and 2) The wifi signal can be quite patchy. It only seemed to work in certain corners on the 1st floor. Other than that though - the property was as advertised and perfect.

Fabulous place, nice people

Spent two weeks from 3rd September to the 17th. We had a great fortnight. It has everything you could possibly need for a holiday stay. Beauriful deco, well equipped, spacious, and welcoming. Nothing is too much trouble, and fresh flowers, scones, and brownies were supplied for us. All facilities are at your disposal, dishwasher, washer/dryer, and the kitchen is large, and spotless, as are all areas. Ashburton, is a super little town, close to Dartmoor, and surrounding towns. Close enough to visit Cornwall too. The saddest part was leaving, but we will back. Thank you to the Bartrums, from Gabby, Nigel, and Rob.

Lovely cottage in Ashburton

We arrived to homemade scones, jam and clotted cream, our food shop having been put away and fresh flowers all over the house. The cottage is very clean and everything is of a high spec. There are some toys for the kids plus spades/buckets and some DVDs and books for adults.

Lovely, light and spacious

Welcomed with fresh flowers, the essentials for a cup of tea or coffee and fresh homemade scones and cream - what else do you go to Devon for? It all felt very clean, including the kitchen utensils and equipment. This is a lovely space to stay in, and in the middle of Ashburton which is a small attractive town with a good mix of shops including antiques, gallery, food shops and places to eat. The drive access is a bit narrow for a large car but the public car park is two minutes away.

This is a great cottage in the centre of Ashburton with fantastic links to Dartmoor and many Devon beaches. The cottage can be found in a quiet little courtyard with ample parking with table and chairs to enjoy the evening sun. The cottage is beautifully presented with modern touches alongside a traditional structure. The owners are helpful and provide flowers and scones to make your stay even more enjoyable.

Clean, bright and comfortable

Our friends joined us at the Old Armoury Barn. Having two bedrooms and two bathrooms worked really well for the four of us. There is spacious living, kitchen and dining area. Our hosts provided everything we needed and made us very welcome. Ashburton is a great holiday destination for local shops, coast and Dartmoor. Lane to barn is extremely narrow. Suggest a passenger get out of the car and guide the driver down the lane. There is only one car space available at the barn.

We have been extremely happy with our home for the week. You made us feel so very welcome. The barn is beautiful and has worked well for us. Thank you for providing this comfortable retreat.

Mr & Mrs Gillespie, May 2016

We recently stayed for five weeks at Old Armoury Barn in Ashburton and it was an outstanding holiday venue. The original barn has been brilliantly converted into a very modern, well appointed and wonderfully light cottage, with all mod cons. It is down a quaint lane in a quiet spot very close to the delightful village of Ashburton, on the edge of Dartmoor. Our hosts Mark and Jackie were very friendly and helpful. Nothing was too much trouble. The fresh flowers and other homely touches were very much appreciated. I highly recommend the Old Armoury Barn for a short or long stay.

Mrs E Houston, November 2015

Thank you again for providing such a lovely base. We will definitely be back!

Mr Grove and Ms Johnson, September 2015

Thank you for a wonderful stay at your beautiful barn. We had a lovely holiday and cannot stress how comfortable and at home we felt. Thanks again.
