Introduction

Hidden away behind high gates, next to a handsome, Georgian style house, with a large garden stretching down to the river, Nadder Barn feels like an oasis of calm yet is only a mile from the hustle and bustle of the centre of Salisbury. Within a few minutes’ drive are the city’s magnificent 13th century cathedral, surrounded by the largest close in England, its museums and historic houses and an abundance of shops, pubs and restaurants located around its ancient market square. Visitors may prefer to take the more leisurely, scenic 2 ¼ mile walk into town along the banks of the Nadder, and across the water meadows, re-tracing the steps of the distinguished 17th century poet George Herbert’s journey from Bemerton to Salisbury Cathedral.

Just a few minutes’ drive from Nadder Barn in the other direction, is Wilton House, a magnificent stately home in the Palladian style, set in 21 acres of parkland and with a world famous art collection. Further afield, but still within 45 minutes’ drive are a number of ‘must-see’ visitor attractions, including Stonehenge, Longleat and Stourhead. For a day’s outing, the unique landscape of the New Forest and the south Dorset coastline (a UNESCO World Heritage site) are also easily reachable.

Dating back 100 years or so, Nadder Barn still retains its exposed beams, original ‘owl slits’ and old brick walls. The slightly rustic interior has been beautifully restored and now offers well lit, stylishly furnished, contemporary living spaces with exceptional attention to detail. French windows from the main living area open out onto a paved patio area, from where a large lawned garden, shared with the owners, stretches down to the River Nadder. Private fishing is available on the north bank.

Accommodation

Entrance into a very spacious, double height, open-plan living room comprising a sitting area with wall-mounted 40” HD TV, a dining area and a fitted kitchen with integral appliances. French windows lead out to the garden. Steepish, carpeted stairs with hand rail lead straight up to the first floor landing giving access to two pretty, beautifully appointed bedrooms, one with twin beds, the other with king-size double. Luxury bathroom/wc at the end of the landing with bath and separate, extra-large, walk-in shower cubicle.

Outside: paved patio area with trellissing on one side and garden furniture. Access to the large, lawned garden, shared with the owners. A secure picket fence spans the length of the garden along the river bank.

What our guests say

Just what we were hoping for

It is rare to get a holiday property that delivers on every front - but Nadder Barn was just charming. The interior was well laid out, beautifully furnished, spotlessly clean, and very stylish. Caroline and Andrew are thoughtful, caring hosts, but the barn is still very private. Salisbury is a great base from which to explore the city and surrounding region. We enjoyed the Salisbury Cathedral Tower tour, trips to Bath, Winchester, Haynes International Car Museum, plus the walks along the river bank of the Nadder River. Loved every minute of it!

A wonderful find!

My wife and I recently stayed here for a two week holiday. Nadder Barn is excellent in all respects. Careful thought and attention to detail throughout has been made by our hosts. Nothing was to much bother and we were made to feel very welcome. It is very comfortable and has been finished to a very high standard. It is secluded behind the main gate for the owners property and access river at the bottom of the garden for fishing was great. There is a small patio area as well. Weather permitting! The barn is ideally situated as a base for day trips to Salisbury,Portsmouth and Southampton. It is close to public transport( buses and trains) I would not hesitate to recommend this place for a stay.

Truly beautiful barn conversion of great charm and character

Tucked away from sight yet within really easy access of the city by car or by rural public footpath, this is a truly exceptional barn conversion, well appointed in every way and a delight to stay in with everything seemingly catered for. Such a high standard of cleanliness, furnishings and décor. Can't recommend it highly enough. Go there! Sleeps 4 easily and properly!

High quality In all respects

A lovely property. All our needs taken care of. Owners friendly and on hand but not intrusive. Well placed to visit all the areas many attractions. Salisbury itself, Stonehenge, beautiful countryside and villages. Delighted by the chance to catch brown trout on the Nadder which really is at the bottom of the lovely garden. A first class hideaway that I would, and have recommended to anyone.

Wonderful week in Wiltshire topped only by a wonderful accommodation. Great holidays, great accommodation. Lovely to meet you all as a family. Betty was lovely and Mo is something else. Thank you. We would not hesitate to return.

Absolutely delightful accommodation & very well equipped. The week went far too quickly. Loved the book selection. Great furniture, substantial and aesthetically pleasing with 'Homes & Gardens' decor.

Tranquility personified

Nadder Barn is truly a wonderful place to relax, unwind and enjoy peace of mind. It is perfectly positioned just on the edge of Salisbury to avoid excessive town noise but close enough (walk, bus or car) to enjoy all its amenities and sights. The property itself has been masterfully and tastefully refurbished, offering first class accommodation. The massive garden at the back and the private south-facing patio are idyllic when the sun shines. The addition of super-fast broadband was a bonus for us silver-surfers! The owner, Caroline, is delightful: ready to answer any enquiries but respectful of one's privacy. Thoroughly recommended.

A lovely family weekend!

Caroline your flair and attention to provide impeccably high standards, quality and style are obvious & very much appreciated. A gorgeous property, garden & location - simply perfect in every way.

10 out of 10!

This is a top quality barn conversion with great attention to detail and high quality fittings and furnishings. No attention spared, even the magazines, tourism information and DVDs are all current and well chosen. And best of all is the most beautiful expansive garden ending in a stream where there are ducks and the loveliest views. Importantly the owner is accessible and responsive as well as most helpful about the local area. Great location short drive from the train station - about 5 minutes - and about 10 minutes into the centre of town. Safe and secure behind large gates. Of the many places I have stayed, this was by far the best quality and value for money.

The perfect home-away-from-home!

My wife and I holiday in the UK every winter and Nadder Barn was the second cottage we’ve tried out in the Salisbury area. It is a lovely property and can be thoroughly recommended as a home-away-from-home for a couple (as in our case) or a family of four. Caroline, the owner, met us on arrival and showed us around. I was delighted to see (we took the property over Christmas week) the cottage beautifully decorated for Christmas, complete with tree and even crackers. A welcome hamper including bread, wine, milk, coffee and even a box of chocolates, was a very nice touch (some laundry liquid might have come in handy, though!). The owners encourage guests to use their beautifully-maintained garden, with a lovely lawn that adjoins the Nadder River, and the house is secured behind electric gates. Although it is in a built-up area about 150 metres from a railway line, we felt as if we were in the country and were not disturbed by noise from road traffic or trains (this was a concern for me as I am a very light sleeper). And despite the frosty -5°C we experienced one night, the central heating worked very well, keeping the house very snug and cosy. The only glitch we had was on our first evening, when we found the heating not working well. I reported this to the owner, who came in immediately and attended to it, calling in a plumber, who arrived within 15 minutes to fix the problem - being after dark during Christmas week, I am familiar enough with the UK to know this was nothing short of magic. There is a very nice 3-km footpath (“Broken Bridges”, I believe it is called) nearby, that leads across the Nadder wetlands, which I recommend highly to anyone who enjoys walking. We also found the Lush House car park on Cranebridge Road a handy place to park and explore the city, a 5 minute walk to the cathedral and other attractions. I tend to be fastidious and picky about where we stay, but wrack my brains as I may, I cannot think a single negative thought about Nadder Barn: all in all, I couldn’t recommend this property more and we hope to stay there again.

Beautiful property and location

I stayed in Nadder Barn for a month for work. The location is idyllic. The barn is well equipped with everything you could possibly need and is beautifully presented. The hosts went out of their way to make us feel so welcome. Caroline even sorted out postage to Australia for a GPS system I left behind! I highly recommend this property for anyone visiting Salisbury. I look forward to my next stay :)

Daughters Wedding

This house is simply amazing and perfect. The location is conveniently close to the city centre without all the hussle and bussle that goes with staying in a city. The accommodation itself is perfect, the owners have very thoughtfully catered for their guests needs. Caroline, the owner is really very nice and caring, she is very genuine with her welcome and tries very hard to make sure that our stay is enjoyable. Already on our list to go back.

We loved our stay here at Nadder Barn. We enjoyed going to National Trust places, eating out at a couple of restaurants for dinner and coffee shops. We also went for some lovely walks and trails; there were some beautiful public footpaths. The children loved the garden.

Great stay in the 'barn' with an excellent selection of books!

Stayed the first week of August with my wife and son (who spent every dry evening playing outside in the lovely garden). Thoroughly enjoyed our week. Lovely place. Great selection of books to read - most impressed. I re-read a couple of old favourites. Our son didn't want to leave.

Thank you so much, we have had a lovely stay at Nadder Barn. The barn is gorgeous, the garden is lovely, the boys have so enjoyed playing with the girls.

A lovely place to stay

We had a wonderful stay at Nadder Barn. This spacious but comfortable cottage provides everything you could wish for. Modern and quality amenities and tastefully decorated. Everything was also spotlessly clean. The location itself is quiet and perfect to explore Salisbury by foot, but there is also a bus stop in front of the house. Other attractions, e.g. Wilton House, Winchester or the New Forest are in easy driving distance. Not to forget the wonderful garden at the back of the house. As we have been blessed with dry weather, our children loved to play there every afternoon. The owners were friendly and helpful too. All in all we really enjoyed this stay and we would definitely stay here again.

A hot week! We all really enjoyed our stay at Nadder Barn and the kids loved playing outside. Highly recomment Bird and Carter in Wilton for food. We had a great stay, a really lovely place and the owners were really nice.

The Taylor family, July 2016

We enjoyed our stay in this wonderful home very much. We could have stayed for longer as there is so much to do and see around Salisbury.

Mrs G David-Stiller, June 2016

Thank you for a great week's holiday. The barn was fantastic!

The Taylor family, June 2016

Our stay at Nadder Barn was superb!

The owners' hospitality, the first class amenities and the surroundings at Nadder Barn exceeded all our expectations. Nothing was too much trouble for you. Our week here was over all too soon. Thank you.

Ms Mawbey and Mr Summerrell, June 2016

Modern and cosy and good location

We stayed here with my two young children over the New Year. It was raining but the house was warm and cosy so you didn't really want to leave. The open plan living downstairs was great, lots of books and toys for the kids and the kitchen was well equipped. The kids loved running up and down the long corridor upstairs. Everything was good quality and spotlessly clean. We found a walking trail nearby that took us all the way into Salisbury. After a good walk (with the children) we ended up in the playground and in Salisbury city centre...a really lovely scenic walk practically on the doorstep. When the weather was dry the sloping garden was great fun for the kids too with the little tree house and the river (which is gated off) at the end of the garden The owner was lovely too, but they left us alone which was nice.

Fabulous stay

Thank you for a fabulous stay in your beautiful Nadder Barn. Everything we needed - a home away from home. I'm sure we will return.

A very relaxing stay

Thank you for a lovely stay at Nadder Barn and a wonderful welcome pack (most useful too). The kids really enjoyed themselves - a good selection of toys - thank you .

The Cook and Lee-Bance family, January 2016

Really enjoyed our stay

We have really enjoyed our stay in Nadder Barn. There are many things to do in the area and we particularly enjoyed walking to Salisbury along the river. We had everything we needed and more in the house and really appreicated the welcome "hamper", the wide range of reading material and the "Art Trail" booklet which Caroline thoughtfully provided.
