Introduction

In a private combe at the end of a track, this delightful cottage is the quintessential ‘hideaway’. The small valley with an idyllic stream running through is in an utterly peaceful and apparently remote location on northern Exmoor but is only 10 minutes from a well-stocked village shop and within easy reach of a wide variety of interesting places to explore. For the active visitor, walks with fine views are all around, whilst Exmoor’s well-known landmarks such as Dunkery Beacon, Tarr Steps and the valleys of the Exe, Barle and East Lyn (setting for Blackmore’s famous novel Lorna Doone) are all easily reached. Slightly further afield is the North Devon and Somerset coast with pretty villages in steep combes such as Porlock, Lynton and Lymouth. The medieval village of Dunster is nearby, with its 11th century castle (NT), old Yarn Market and interesting shops, pubs and restaurants. Minehead to the north and Tiverton to the south have plenty of shops and facilities, and a visit to Taunton, county town of Somerset, can be combined with a day exploring the beautiful and little-known Quantock Hills to the east.

A former miner’s cottage, Lower Goosemoor has surprisingly large and light rooms, modernised with flair and sensitivity. Warm and welcoming, it is thoughtfully equipped and is perfectly complemented by its enchanting grounds. The house is on a bank with grassy areas bordering the stream, a copse and various sitting-out places in front. Three footbridges span the brook and downstream, just outside the cottage grounds but easily visible, is a small lake with an abundance of wildlife.

This cottage is the epitome of a country retreat, a perfect place in which to relax and recharge the batteries before reluctantly rejoining the real world.

Beautiful cottage in a beautiful setting

Lower Goosemoor Cottage is a beautiful cottage in a beautiful and tranquil setting. As other reviews have said the photos don't do the cottage justice. It has been tastefully decorated and equipped to a very high standard, we didn't want for anything. It was immaculately clean and the welcome hamper was impressive. The garden is lovely with different areas to sit, it is very peaceful with only the sound of the stream and the wind in the trees. We would highly recommend and we will definitely be returning

Flawless Perfection English Country Cottage

As we got out of our car when we arrived at Lower Goosemoor cottage we were both totally in awe of the cottage and it's garden's beauty. The garden is breathtaking and is a haven of tranquillity. The only sounds are bird song, the breeze through the trees and the trickle of water from the stream. The cottage has been decorated and furnished to the highest standards. We arrived to cake, wine, bacon, eggs, butter, milk and other supplies such as tea, coffee, sugar, washing up liquid, etc. There was even a draw in the bathroom full of items in case we had forgotten to pack anything! We had an amazing week and will definitely be staying again.

Excellent - an ideal place to stay.

This review echoes the sentiments of earlier ones. The photos (which are impressive) don't do this place justice! It is a beautiful setting, with a wonderful garden/grounds to explore, lots of places to sit and have tea/lunch/play games/read etc. If you are quiet enough, there is plenty of wildlife to observe too. A pair of lesser spotted woodpeckers were regular visitors to the bird seed holder on the tree close to the house. Inside the house are lots of lovely messages clearly explaining the set up, and the cleanliness was sublime. A nice touch was the bread, eggs, and other food already in the fridge! The WiFi was a bit temperamental, but that's rural broadband for you! Not that it was a detriment since it was nice to get away! The track running from the road to the cottage is a bit narrow, but manageable for most vehicles. A picturesque location for a getaway. Definitely worth booking! Thank you :)

The most beautiful place we've ever stayed!

We had a four night break in May, my husband and me, our daughter and her partner. We were totally amazed at the beautiful house and garden. The photos really don't do it justice, it is absolutely spectacular. We would all certainly go back and now our other daughter wants to bring her family down too. Totally perfect in every way.

Wonderful!

Even the lovely photos do not do this property justice. My family and I rented this property for a week in the summer and loved every moment there. The decor and the finishes of the property were top class and it was clearly restored with care. The property was beautifully clean and the grounds perfectly maintained. We managed to use this for a base to see what Exmoor had to offer and always looked forward to getting back to the cottage at the end of the day. Definitely worth a stay if you want to get away from things and have that cottage feel in absolute comfort.
