Introduction

With its eyebrow-thatch windows and picture-postcard appearance, Little Owl is the quintessential English country cottage and is surrounded by its delightful and very private garden. In a small, peaceful village, close to the village church, it is very well-located for easy access to the many interesting attractions in this beautiful area, much of which is a National Park and an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. For active holidaymakers the South Downs Way and the Meon and Itchen Valleys offer superb walking and cycling opportunities with excellent pubs along the way. There are also a number of villages with historical connections such as Jane Austen’s Chawton, and Selborne, famous for Gilbert White’s ‘Natural History’. The cathedral city of Winchester is about 20 minutes by car whilst Chichester is less than an hour away. The market town of Petersfield, which has a good range of shops, is 3 miles and High Cross itself has a well-stocked and friendly village shop.

While the cottage has a number of surprisingly spacious rooms, it is at the same time very cosy and comfortably furnished and is perfectly complemented by its well-maintained and pretty garden. Little Owl is an altogether charming place to stay in this deservedly popular region.

Accommodation

Front entrance porch leading into a small hallway. Sitting room with wood burner and door to rear garden. Dining room with inglenook fireplace (decorative purpose only) and French windows leading out to the garden. Archway to kitchen with fitted wood units and large electric ‘range’ cooker. Tiled passage way leads from the kitchen to utility cupboards, downstairs shower room/wc and back door. Stairs from hallway lead to a half-landing with bathroom/wc on this level. Double-ended bath with shower attachment (NB not full length) and under floor heating. Further stairs (fairly steep) to main landing. Three bedrooms, two with kingsize double beds and one with 3’ twin beds; all three with built-in cupboards and attractive sloping ceilings. NB door from one double leads to the twin room, which also has its own access via secondary staircase from dining room, leading straight into the bedroom.

Outside: very pretty garden surrounding the cottage with lawns, shrubs and flower beds. Thatched summerhouse with croquet set. Spacious garden room providing a clutter-free play area for children with sofa, toys, games and DVD player or a quiet work space away from the main house.

What our guests say

Beautiful, comfortable cottage. Well equipped & with all the essentials provided - many thanks for that. Well located for exploring. Here is some of what we did:
Hawkley Inn walk - quite demanding, especially coming back. Winchester - flying visit. Portsmouth Historic docks - great but would have needed more time. Hinton Ampner - National Trust property nearby - really good. Bike ride in New Forest, from Brockenhurst - lovely. We were busy!

The Walton family, August 2017.

We've thoroughly enjoyed our week in this little charming cottage. The fireplace was enjoyable to use and the garden has received a good deal of care, making it a delight to be in. Our cat also seemed to enjoy chattering with the local birds - she is a talker rather than a hunter. Winchester was quite beautiful. This was our first time in Hampshire - we were impressed. We discovered some great pub food nearby, including the Thomas Lord and The Hawkley Inn. All in all a great holiday in a very nice part of England. Thank you!

Dr Zhu, April 2017

Beautiful cottage! We all had a lovely time staying here. Trooper Inn & Hawkley Inn were great. Thank you. I must say also how nice it was to arrive to a lovely & clean house!

We had a wonderful 'English' Christmas in this amazing cottage. We were super impressed with the Xmas decorations. All our friends who saw the cottage on our facebook photos thought it should be on a chocolate box! Many thanks; our 10 year old daughter's dream of sleeping under a thatched roof has come true!

Mrs Brickwood, New Zealand, December 2016.

It was very welcoming to arrive at Little Owl with the lights on and it was warm and cosy indoors. Thank you for the lovely welcome gifts. We have very much enjoyed our holiday here discovering the beautiful conuntryside. We can definitely recommend the local pub "with no name".

Dr Smits and Dr Cortsen, November 2016

All enjoyed a lovely holiday in a lovely cottage, surrounded by beautiful countryside views. We would recommend the Fox Goes in Charlton and The Earl of March in Lavant, both served great food.

The R. family, September 2016

Thanks for such a wonderful time. Sitting in the garden we had all the peace to properly relax and the little ones were totally amazed by all the toys. We definitely would have loved to stay longer.

We've had a lovely holiday in this pretty cottage. The children loved their 'own's stairs to the bedroom. Our dog loved the safely enclosed garden and we all enjoyed visiting the many interesting places which were new to us all. Thank you for the welcome pack, especially the new toy for Josee. Thanks for everything.

Mrs Sullivan, August 2016

Wonderful!

A wonderful cottage in a quiet village. Well equipped, the welcome bottle of prosecco was a lovely touch. The steep stairs may be difficult for disabled guests.

We have had the most marvellous week, beautiful relaxing cottage in a super location. The weather has been perfect. We have travelled the area - a trip down memory lane. The pub with no name is a must. Also, the ploughman's lunch at The Harrow Inn at Steep is highly recommended. The cottage is fully equipped with all essentials and the garden is lovely. We will recommend to family and friends, without hesitation. Thank you!

Mr and Mrs Derrett and friends, June 2016.

Little Owl lived up to its photos and descriptions on the web. We had a family get together and celebrated a first birthday with parents, grandparents, aunt and uncle. We could not have asked for a more cosy, welcoming and charming environment. The family enjoyed the lawn and had a fun afternoon playing croquet. The living room with its fireplace made for great conversations and games. The kitchen was well-equipped and we were impressed with the abundance and quality of crockery and cutlery and not to miss the cooking range (a chef's delight). We noticed that painstaking thought and planning have gone into the big items as well as the small. Thank you for making our experience so memorable.

The Collins and Swarup families, March 2016.

Thank you for a lovely stay in the comfortable and cosy cottage. It certainly hit the mark for a much needed restful break. Plenty of lovely pubs nearby to eat in (Trouper Inn, Hawkley Inn). We ran the Rubix Chilli Hilly on the Saturday which was very wet and muddy - so very thankful to have a warm cottage to come back to!! Will certainly stay here again. Many thanks.

Miss Gilmore, January 2016.

Beautiful cottage, will certainly recommend to friends and family. The walk around the Hangers was stunning (just a little muddy). The welcome pack was a lovely surprise. The local pub, The Troopers Inn, did some lovely food. They even opened early for us - would certainly love to come back for another stay!

Mr & Mrs Brown, November 2015

On arrival the cottage was a welcome and pretty sight. A super, quiet, private retreat. The first morning we awoke to the September golden sun dappling through the trees on our bedroom windows and the chirpy singing of the robin. Perfection! Little Owl covered all our needs and more - Thank you so much for the 'Welcome Pack' - it was a very kind gesture. Pip, our miniature Schnauzer, was extremely happy with his new toy, and abandoned those he brought. A lovely, lovely cottage. Thank you.
