Two exceptional, lovingly restored cottages in South Wiltshire’s beautiful Chalke Valley….

North and South Cottages offer an opportunity to stay somewhere quite exceptional in South Wiltshire’s highly sought after Chalke Valley where the sparkling River Ebble flows eastwards on its journey to the cathedral city of Salisbury, 8 miles away. Both cottages have been the subject of a painstakingly researched, no-expense-spared refurbishment where period features – original beams and stonework – go hand-in- hand with state-of-the-art kitchen and bathroom facilities and where understated good taste and style are evident throughout the interiors. The cottages can be reserved individually with their own private entrances and gardens but if booked jointly they are perfect for larger groups of up to ten guests who will be able to make use of South Cottage’s large, convivial dining area.

The cottages are also of historical interest, being situated within the grounds of an ancient and historic Grade II* listed house – The King’s Old Rectory, which the Abbess of Wilton handed over to Henry VI as part of the endowment of the newly founded King’s College Cambridge. Centuries later, in the 1900s, the house was visited by many well-known literary figures of the time including the poet laureate, Robert Bridges and the author Thomas Hardy. The Hollywood actress, Greta Garbo is said to have been photographed by Sir Cecil Beaton sitting on the bridge over the Ebble in the Rectory’s garden.

Forming part of the Cranborne Chase Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, the surrounding countryside can justly claim to be some of the finest in southern England. Walkers, riders and cyclists are particularly well served by the multitude of footpaths, bridle ways and cycle routes which run along the valley while a walk up to the old Ox Drove on the chalk ridge above will be richly rewarded by the sweeping views across the surrounding downland as far as the Dorset coast in the distance.

If you’re exploring the area by car, there is an almost limitless number of attractions to see. Within 30 to 40 minutes’ drive are Salisbury with its superb cathedral, Wilton House, Stonehenge, Longleat and The New Forest. A little further, the Georgian city of Bath and Dorset’s World Heritage coastline are within comfortable reach for a day’s outing.

North and South Cottages are approached through their gardens from a large, gated gravel driveway and parking area which are bounded on one side by a garden wall, separating the cottages from the grounds of the main house. Furnished and equipped to extremely high specifications, both cottages have an uncluttered, contemporary feel. A fireplace with woodburning stove in each cottage creates a welcoming atmosphere and means they are very suitable for year-round letting.

Approach along a gently sloping gravel pathway through the garden. Entrance hall with flagged floor. Downstairs cloakroom/wc. Large, very light drawing room with double sofa bed for alternative sleeping only and an inglenook-style fireplace containing a woodburning stove; French windows lead out to the garden. Two stone steps lead up to a large, state-of-the-art fitted kitchen with integral appliances and Aga-style ‘Everhot’ cooker. A doorway leads through to an impressive, double height, oak-framed, dining/garden room with double doors leading out to the garden.

Steepish, carpeted stairs with hand rail lead to the first floor landing. Large master bedroom with linked beds, providing a choice of twin beds or super kingsize double. En suite bathroom/wc with free standing bath and big walk-in shower. Two further double bedrooms - one with kingsize double and ensuite bathroom/wc with independent shower over the bath and the other with a ‘standard’ size double. Family bathroom/wc with independent shower over the bath. NB some changes of level, low ceilings and doorways on this floor.

Further carpeted stairs from the first floor landing lead directly up into a big twin bedroom under the eaves with a single bed on either side of the staircase. NB limited head height and changes of level in this bedroom.

Outside there is a lawned garden surrounded by yew hedging. A Weber charcoal barbecue is provided.
