Introduction

In its own private enclosed garden in the grounds of the owners’ ancient manor house, Duck’s Cottage has been converted and extended from former stables to an excellent standard with meticulous attention to detail. The result is a bright, comfortable and surprisingly spacious home from home. At the end of a ‘no-through’ country lane, on the edge of the small village of Charlton St. Peter, the cottage is very well-placed for exploration of this interesting area which is exceptionally rich in world-famous prehistoric archaeological sites such as Stonehenge, Silbury Hill, Avebury Rings and several white horses cut into hillsides in the Vale of Pewsey and nearby. Savernake Forest, just outside the delightful small town of Marlborough (about 15 miles) is ideal for walks and picnics, and narrowboat trips are available on the Kennet and Avon Canal a short distance away. Further afield but within an hour’s drive is the cathedral city of Salisbury to the South, while a similar distance to the West lies the Georgian city of Bath, not far from which are Longleat House and Safari Park, and Lacock Village and Abbey (NT), once the home of the photography pioneer Henry Fox-Talbot. For the active visitor, there are pretty walks straight from the cottage, the nearest one following the stream which runs beside the property. For keen anglers, coarse and fly fishing are available locally.

Very careful consideration of every aspect of the cottage and clever use of space has resulted in a light and attractive interior, with a private and inviting garden at the rear of the cottage – a welcoming place to return to after a long day’s exploring.

Location

What our guests say

If you were to imagine your perfect holiday cottage ...

... this would probably be it. Spacious, comfortable, clean. All amenities. Best bits: lots of space; really comfy beds; dishwasher, washing machine and dryer; oven, grill, microwave, toaster, kettle, cafetiere, iron and board; big lounge, with lots of cosy sofas and big telly (but not obtrusive) with DVD; the incredibly friendly welcome. Worst bits (being picky): the lighting and decor doesn't make the most of the cottage; the village is very charming, but the nearest shop is five miles away; stunning walks all round, but don't stray onto the nearby firing range (Salisbury Plain). Generally, you will rely on getting around by car. There are many places to visit. We recommend Rick Stein's restaurant in Marlborough, for one.

Charming place with great hosts

Stayed here for a family wedding. Facilities and location were fabulous. Hosts Alma and Tim made sure all our needs were met. The home made scones with cream and jam were a lovely treat when we arrived. Would definitely recommend to anyone.

Very high quality holiday cottage

Warmest of welcomes from Alma with fresh produce including eggs from the farm awaiting and scones baked not a couple of hours before our arrival. And fresh flowers! Spotless clean and comfortable cottage with every convenience imaginable. We visited the orphaned lambs in the shed each day and whilst quiet and secluded there was the feeling of a working farm. Lovely quiet part of Wiltshire but within easy reach of the canal, lovely walks, Avebury, Salisbury, Stourhead, Lacock and more. Great holiday.

Easter Weekend Family Break

This is a lovely cottage which was perfect for our family Easter weekend break with our dogs. Had a lovely by the owners who had also made fresh scones, jam and cream, and left fresh bread and milk. Plenty of good walks and lovely pubs not to far away. The cottage is also well equipped and spacious. Will definitely return in the near future.

Lovely cottage

Lovely cottage with three good size bedrooms and three bathrooms (one en suite). Plenty of private parking for three cars. On arrival there was lovely homemade scones, jam and clotted cream, bread, butter, eggs, tea and coffee. Owners very friendly and helpful with ideas for places to eat and visit. I would definitely recommend it. Nice quiet location.

Home from home

This is the best cottage we have ever stayed in, it is home from home in so many ways. The design has been carefully thought through and it is extremely well equipped. The bed is comfortable and the bathrooms are excellent. It is also a easy house to keep clean ( if you know what I mean ). The garden is totally secure and there are some beautiful walks around the adjoining farm. The owners are really lovely, there if you need them but not at all intrusive, and I have to say that they provide the best welcome pack we have ever seen. Nothing is too much trouble. Would we go back? Yes of course, in fact we have already booked and are looking forward to staying at Ducks Cottage again.

Came for an Easter break away for peace and tranquility which the cottage and owners certainly offered from arrival. Very warm welcome and freshly baked scones homemade jam and cream. Cottage was very clean and had everything we needed. Great walks right on the doorstep and can definitely say the dogs loved it! Many thanks I am sure we will be back!

Fabulous!

Just came back from a new year stay at Ducks cottage. 3 couples, 2 dogs! Everything we could have wanted in a cottage. Super clean, spacious and great location. Fresh eggs, milk, bread and butter awaited us on arrival. Also some lovely home made mince pies, made by the owners' son - very much appreciated with a cup of tea! We have been going away together for more than 10 years and have stayed in numerous cottages and this was one of the best. Friendly helpful owners. Nothing too much trouble. Would highly recommend.

Beautiful Cottage - Dog Friendly too!!

Beautiful 3 bedroom cottage set in the lovely little hamlet of Charlton St Peters in the Wiltshire countryside. Cottage was home from home very clean and comfortable. The owners were very welcoming and left us a welcome gift of eggs, bread, milk and freshly made scones and clotted cream which was a nice touch, The entire cottage was modern and warm and there was plenty of room for a party of six. Lovely enclosed garden which meant the dogs could not escape and lots of lovely walks in the area..

Quiet rural retreat

Converted Grade 2 listed stables of small Manor House, a working farm in the vale of Pewsey with drove lanes up to Salisbury Plain to the South, and the North Wessex downs with White Horse in the chalk downs to the North. Lovely cottage, very comfortable and well equipped, with welcoming hosts who provide extra personal touches, fresh flowers, eggs and scones to make visitors truly welcome. Beautiful landscape and great walks from the doorstep. Wonderful.

Home from home comforts and a much welcomed break. Hope to be back in 2017

The Munro family, November 2016.

Highly recommended

This is a comfortable and well equipped cottage in a peaceful location. The owners gave us a warm welcome. There is a good network of foot paths & bridle paths direct from the cottage in all directions and there are some excellent pubs/restaurants in the vicinity.

Fabulous - when can we come back?!!

From the moment we arrived it was obvious that Duck's Cottage was one of the BEST holiday cottages we have stayed in, in England. Fresh, warm scones on arrival and a lovely welcome from the owners. My Mum-in-law was delighted to have a downstairs bedroom and shower room. We all loved the open plan feel and views open countryside. We spent a lot of time just relaxing at the cottage, walking over the fields and pottering in nearby Marlborough. We were staying down in Wiltshire to see family and will definitely book Duck's Cottage again in preference to a B&B or hotel!

The best cottage we have ever stayed in!

We rented the cottage for a 4 night stay over the New Year period. On arrival we were greeted by the owner & his daughter who were so friendly & welcoming. As befits the time of year it was cold & wet outside but the property was so warm & welcoming with a beautifully decorated Christmas tree. They kindly provided fresh scones, jam & clotted cream as well as milk & bread - very welcome! The decor was to a very high standard with good quality bedding & bath sheets. We have stayed in cottages where the towels etc provided left much to be desired! Fantastic walks straight from the cottage, my exuberant Springer Spaniel didn't have to go on the lead once so he had a great break too. I have rented holiday cottages annually for the last 12 years & this is the best by far.
