Moretonhampstead, Dartmoor National Park Cottages
Close to the charming moorland town of Moretonhampstead yet in a completely rural and tranquil setting, The Hayloft is a delightful conversion of a traditional farm building. With advice from English Heritage the owner has achieved a sensitive and skilful result. Its location is perfect for easy access to all that Dartmoor has to offer an almost endless choice of wonderful walks through wooded valleys with rivers and streams, up lofty granite tors with panoramic views, or around beautifully-sited reservoirs. The Hayloft forms one side of a gravelled courtyard above the stables and all its accommodation is on the 1st floor accessed from a very attractive, ground floor entrance hallway.
The open-plan living and sleeping areas have wonderful vaulted, beamed ceilings creating a tremendous feeling of light and space. Carefully chosen furnishings, fabrics and paint colours combined with atmospheric lighting all contribute towards making this a very special place to stay.
Entrance from courtyard into a welcoming ground floor hall. The accommodation is all on the first floor.
Stairs lead directly into a very large bedroom on upper floor with kingsize double bed, portable screen for additional privacy and 3' daybed for alternative sleeping.
En suite, very smart bathroom/wc with separate shower cubicle and 'rain' showerhead.
Opening from bedroom area (three steps down) to a huge, open-plan living room. Sitting area with woodburner and two rocking chairs; separate TV area with additional sofas. Well-planned L-shaped fitted kitchen at the far end of the room with electric cooker and 4-ring inset halogen hob. Dining area overlooking the courtyard below.
Beyond the courtyard gate, guests have exclusive use of a lovely meadow with a profusion of wild flowers, primroses, cowslips, ox-eye daises according to season - and an original shepherd's hut at the far end, just perfect for that evening gin and tonic. The meadow overlooks a shallow valley with fine long-distance views to Haytor Rocks.
Pub and shop within easy walking distance. Sorry no pets. No smoking. Unsuitable for children under 14 years old. WiFi and IPod dock.
Please be aware that lambing occurs in mid March on the next door farm and there can be some noise from the lambs and sheep. Many find this a pleasant and enjoyable noise but felt we should make potential guests aware of this.
The Hayloft lies close to the charming moorland town of Moretonhampstead in the middle of Dartmoor. There are fantastic walks from the front door of the property through through wooded valleys with rivers and streams, up lofty granite tors with panoramic views, or around beautifully-sited reservoirs. All outdoor activities are catered for; cycling, canoeing, riding and exceptional fly-fishing on the Dart and Teign rivers. Further afield are sleepy villages, many historic houses and castles including Cotehele on the Tamar and nearby Castle Drogo, both National Trust. The cities of Exeter and Plymouth, as well as both north and south Devon coastlines are easy destinations for a day out.
"So perfect! We stayed for a week and enjoyed our stay immensely. This is a beautifully converted barn, thoughtfully equipped for your every need. It has been restored sympathetically in line with its history; wonderful restored beams, windows and doors. It's a beautiful large airy space with modern fitted kitchen and a stunning bathroom equipped with a large fantastic shower and bath! The Hayloft has also been so tastefully decorated and comfortably furnished by Alison, the lovely host. The location is excellent, within walking distance of Moretonhampstead, which is a lovely village with a good choice of places to eat; thoroughly recommend the Sunday lunch at the The White Hart and Berto's for a deliciously authentic pizza."Guest's review on TripAdvisor 2017-06-20
