Wedmore, Somerset Cottages
Found at the bottom of the owners' drive, on the edge of the tiny hamlet of Cocklake, Wassail Cottage is a beautifully converted former hay store, and a holiday home that has been described as a 'true gem' by previous guests. With an unusual name derived from the ancient ceremony of wassailing (drinking a 'cup' and singing to the apple trees in cider-producing regions) it overlooks an apple orchard from which the owners make a number of delicious products - as you would expect from this part of the countyside!
Wassail Cottage has undergone a wholesale update and the finished product is beautiful and very smart; the living accommodation is especially attractive presented in a contemporary style; very light, welcoming and spacious. We felt at home immediately and we're sure you will too the moment you walk in and 'switch off'. A wonderful barn in some traditional Somerset countyside.
Entrance from patio via French window to:
Open plan Living Area with sofa, two chairs, tiled floor, wood burning stove and Dining Area with small, extendable dining table/chairs.
Separate, 'galley' Kitchen Area with fitted units, oven, slimline dishwasher and stable door to patio.
Bedroom One with king size 'sleigh' bed.
Bedroom Two with full size bunk beds and small chest of drawers.
Family Shower Room/WC with large walk-in shower.
Delightfully sunny patio, perfect for sitting out with a glass or two in the evenings. Additional grassed garden area just across the drive. Guest access to a large paddock behind owner's house which leads to a footpath and to their medieval apple orchard from where there are wonderful views across to the Mendip Hills.
Sorry no pets. Space for guest's own cot. No smoking.
Wassail Cottage is perfectly located for visiting the almost endless attractions and places of interest in this area of Somerset and is close to the Mendip Hills Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. It is just a mile from the nearest village, Wedmore, with its reputation for good food and drink, and only three miles from Cheddar, with its famous gorge and caves. Wookey Hole is also a great location for a family day out and is eight miles away.
The medieval city of Wells with its cathedral and close, and Glastonbury, scene of the great annual festival, are both well worth a visit and less than half an hour's drive away.
A little further afield, you might like to spend a day exploring both the World Heritage city of Bath, with its Roman remains and superb Georgian architecture, and Bristol with its many attractions (Clifton Suspension Bridge, Bristol Zoo and Cabot Circus Shopping Centre).
For those preferring to be outdoors, the local countryside has plenty of excellent walks and cycle rides. For dramatic landscapes, why not try both the Somerset Levels and West Somerset coastline which are within easy reach.
"A beautiful cottage with the most fantastic host. We stayed at the cottage for 2 weeks with our daughters (ages 6 and 8) and it was absolutely ideal. A beautiful hamper on arrival from the owner, Tracy, who went totally above and beyond during our stay. The cottage is perfect for a self catering holiday with everything you need and is in a lovely location that is a great base to explore Somerset. Our girls loved having the free reign of the orchard and paddock and toasting marshmallows on open fire was a total delight. Would strongly recommend."Guest's review on TripAdvisor 2017-08-15
"Having stayed in countless cottages across the UK, I don't think we have ever received such a wonderful and warm welcome as the one we had from Tracey. Her welcome hamper was just so special and full of her homemade delights! The cottage is all newly renovated to the highest standard and is so tastefully decorated. The beds were so comfortable. In a beautiful and peaceful location...but a short drive to so many wonderful places of interest. A true gem! ❤️"Guest's review on TripAdvisor 2017-02-17
