Newnham on Severn, Forest of Dean & Wye Valley Cottages
A distinctive setting for a mini-break or longer, The Red Bus surely must be one of the most unusual places to spend a holiday as a couple or with your family. In a secluded spot adjoining a paddock (with its friendly goats), you will find yourself embracing life in the country as soon as you arrive.
Much skill and imagination has been employed by the owner to create a really attractive and practical living space on both floors of the bus. It's a real masterclass in how to make the best possible use of somewhat limited space inside and guests absolutely love it! It really is a characterful and cosy space with charming decor and furnishings, all designed with comfort in mind.
The Red Bus will accommodate a maximum of four adults and four children but is better suited for a total of six guests. NB maximum standing height on the bus is 68 inches (one metre 73).

A separate outbuilding a few yards from the bus provides showering facilities (NB head height is 68 inches (one metre 72).
Right in front of the bus you can also spill out on to the generous decking area outside which has a picnic table and further seating. There's a sandpit with toys for smaller children just below and a firepit with cooking utensils and benches around it where all the family can gather and enjoy this magical setting. In the evening, the deck is illuminated by soft 'fairy' lighting in the evening making this a truly special place to stay.
One well behaved dog, downstairs only. Not suitable for children under 4. No smoking.
Close to the Forest of Dean, this is a wonderfully peaceful location with only the bleating of sheep and the owner's friendly goats in the adjoining paddock to break the silence. With wildlife in abundance and plenty of wonderful walks right on your doorstep, there really is so much to see and do in a great area for a family holiday.
Symond's Yat Rock on the River Wye, with its spectacular views spanning several counties, is half an hour's drive away and you can also hire a canoe in the village or enjoy a riverside drink at one of the pubs. Plenty of walks and cycle routes can be found in the Forest of Dean itself which is a magical setting with its ancient mines and 300 year old oak trees. From nearby Lydney you can take a trip on the newly opened Dean Forest Railway (steam locomotive to Parkend).
There are many historic sites to explore in the region - the Welsh border castles, Tintern Abbey, the cathedral city of Gloucester - while the Cotswolds, Brecon Beacons and the Malvern Hills are all within easy driving distance.
For local shops, pubs and restaurants, Newnham On Severn is only 3 miles away. From here you'll find excellent views of the river (watch the surfers on the famous Bore!) and almost immediate access across the fields to the Severn Way footpath.
"Our family had paid for us to spend a weekend at the Red Bus for our 25th wedding anniversary. What a fantastic gift. Jane and Lee gave us a very warm welcome (including decorating the bus with bunting!). The bus is just great, quirkily converted it retains enough of its original fixtures and fittings (including driver's seat and steering wheel) so you are always aware you are on a bus, but has comfortable bedrooms, galley kitchen, living room and toilet (shower room is in a small building alongside). Outside is a decked area, a fire pit and large area of grass. The Red Bus is set in a quiet valley, so wherever you are in the bus you get a great view of open fields, trees and the wider Gloucestershire countryside. There are some very entertaining goats in the neighbouring paddock. Our two children (girls 8 and 11) loved our stay. It's a great location from which to explore the Forest of Dean, but equally you could have a great break if you never left the bus at all! Despite being close to other houses and holiday let's it still feels remote. (We were told there had been a lovely party taking place nearby during our stay, but we never heard a thing!) As a family we couldn't recommend The Red Bus highly enough."Guest's review on TripAdvisor 2017-07-31
"I booked the Big Red Bus as a birthday treat for my two granddaughters and their Mum came along for the ride and what a ride it was. The views from different windows gave the impression that the bus was moving although it was stationary. The peace and tranquillity and fantastic views, the friendly goats and horses together with the friendly hospitality of Jane and Lee made it a truly wonderful experience and we hope to return real soon."Guest's review on TripAdvisor 2017-07-24
"Booked this as a surprise for my wife's 50th birthday and can honestly say it surpassed all my expectations. The setting is absolutely magical and the bus has clearly been renovated and designed with much love. Lee and Jane's attention to detail is second to none. Sitting outside in the evening watching all the local wildlife while cooking over the fire pit was an experience not to be missed and Jane had even decorated the bus with birthday bunting and provided a cake and champagne - honestly we didn't want to leave."Guest's review on TripAdvisor 2017-05-18
