Devizes, Wiltshire Cottages
Standing at the entrance to an impressive, Grade II listed mansion, The Carriage House is a delightful property situated in the small village of Worton, six miles from the attractive market town of Devizes. It sits in an unspoilt and relatively unexplored part of Wiltshire, ideal for those seeking a tranquil place for a holiday.
After careful restoration by the owners, the guest accommodation makes up the major part of this former carriage house. There is ample space for a larger group of family or friends but it is equally suitable for a smaller party due to its intimate quality. Stylishly decorated and furnished, you'll find plenty to make you feel completely at home. During your stay you'll also have access to parts of the extensive grounds surrounding the main house (great for children to explore), including use of the hard tennis court, the adjoining, secluded, walled garden and former deer park beyond.
If you're a history buff you'll be fascinated by reports that the main house was reputedly used by Churchill, Eisenhower and Sikorsky for secret meetings during the Second World War!

The house provides an ideal base from which to explore the many attractions of this fascinating part of Wiltshire. The area is rich in prehistoric sites such as Avebury Stone Circle, Silbury Hill and Kennet Long Barrow and is also of interest for its industrial past - Crofton Beam Engines and a working windmill at Wilton. Narrow boat trips can be enjoyed on the nearby Kennet and Avon Canal and there is plenty of good walking on Salisbury Plain with immediate access onto a public footpath from the house. For keen anglers lake fishing is available within walking distance at Mill Farm Fisheries.
The historic towns of Bradford-on-Avon and Marlborough, well known for their antique shops, pubs and restaurants, are a short drive from Worton, while the Georgian city of Bath, a World Heritage site, the cathedral city of Salisbury and Stonehenge are within half an hour's drive. Further afield, The Cotswolds and Oxford are within reach for a day's excursion.
"Our family stayed for a week at this charming cottage two weeks before Christmas. When we arrived the Xmas tree was decorated and the cottage was warm and clean. Excellent place to base yourself to explore the area. We travelled to Salisbury, Bath and Devizes for some Xmas shopping. Only 25 minutes to Stonehenge and travelled back to Watford for Harry Potter world. So many places to visit from here we just needed more time. Lucy was always friendly with advice on where to travel too and timing. The cottage was well equipped and there was plenty of room for the party of 5 staying the week. Great place to stay out in the country."Guests from Australia's review on TripAdvisor 2016-12-20
"Great house. Clean comfortable and homely. Stayed here for our daughters wedding with our other 4 children and some partners and grandchild. Plenty of room, great amenities, log fire, big table to sit around and hosts that have to be experienced to be believed. Lucy and David are special people who go out of their way to make guests stay as enjoyable as possible. Our daughter was lucky enough to have the use of the Eisenhower Bridal Suite in the main house, which is top class luxury, to get ready in. A treat she will never forget. Bridal prep in a house that was used by Churchill, Eisenhower and Sikorski for discussions during world war two does not happen for everyone. Lucy and David facilitated this and we are most grateful."Guest's review on TripAdvisor 2016-11-14
"Lucy and David, our hosts, went out of their way to make sure everything ran smoothly for our large and constantly changing group. The cottage is beautifully decorated but also highly functional with two bathrooms and a modern, well-equipped kitchen. We had unfettered access to their park-like garden and tennis court, and could (and did!) call on them frequently to borrow the BBQ or larger pots for the kitchen, get advice about trains and local transport and Lucy often left produce from her garden on our doorstep knowing we had a crowd to feed! The location is brilliant; the younger adults in our party had a nightcap most nights at the very authentic old English pub across the road, and we had many walks and bicycle rides through the charming countryside on quiet roads and byways. Devizes, with a wonderful open air market on a Thursday am, as well as all the usual supermarkets and shops (including bicycle hire at the garden Centre) was a 10 minute drive away and the historic cities of Bath, Salisbury and Winchester were all an easy drive away. So, a very happy fortnight was had by all, and I am looking forward very much to returning!"Guest's review on TripAdvisor 2016-08-06
