Paula “Gorgeous cottage would love to stay again”
- Paula, October 2021 -
Robert “A perfect cottage in a beautiful area.”
We thoroughly enjoyed our second stay there. A minor comment…the cottage needs a larger carving board.
- Robert, September 2021Nicola “The cottage has great potential and is well located, unfortunately it is not well maintained or equipped.”
The oven was filthy and needs professional cleaning, there was a dirty broken casserole in the cupboard, dirty baking trays, dogs hairs on the crockery, dogs hairs ingrained in the carpet, sofas were very uncomfortable, beds uncomfortable, pillow was brown and stained, DVD player does not work, TV is basic, shower held together with an elastic band, the toaster still had crumbs in and around it and the table cloth had several rips in it. We spent as much time out as possible and went out for meals. We complained to Sykes but still waiting to hear. Came home a day early couldn't stand it any longer.
- Nicola, September 2021Thank you for your feedback. Sykes Cottages attempted to reach you by phone on 19/9/21 within an hour of receiving your message but were unable to speak to you. A follow up email was sent at the same time and remedial action was requested for the issues you had raised at the time. Your complaint will be fully investigated and we will reach out to you again once the investigation is complete. Property Owner
Lydia “1. We twice informed the company that we had infants in our group, stair gates were provided but no cots.”
When we contacted the company about this, we received the unsympathetic reply that they would not be provided during our stay. 2. The cottage needs professional cleaners in and lots of care and attention. - Furniture is covered in cobwebs - Downstairs bathroom was rank with stagnant water in the shower basin. - Shower head kept up with elastic band. - Curtains unkempt and dusty. - Carpet stained and dirty. - Sink in kitchen turned my stomach when I removed plugs. - Oven was filthy as were the trays in it. - None of the windows lock properly.
- Lydia, August 2021Paul “We were extremely dissatisfied with the cottage.”
Given the current pandemic we were particularly concerned by the very poor level of cleaning. This cottage is tired and grubby, not even basics were clean, including the fridge, crockery and cutlery - the cutlery drawer was very dirty. Corners in rooms are full of cobwebs where no care has been taken and clearly the vacuum has just been run over the middle part of floors. The quality of furnishings are shoddy, the lounge furniture has seen far better days and extremely uncomfortable as the webbing / supports have gone. The mattresses and pillows in the bedrooms are also of poor quality too. The bathrooms were not clean and even my teenage son did not want to use the ground floor one describing it as “crusty” - things are bad when a teenager notices! There is a mishmash of wire hangers in the wardrobes and the large mirror just propped up on the dressing table is not even secured. The outside furniture had not been cleaned and was covered in bird droppings so to sit out we needed to first wash all the furniture down. There is also come confusion about who to contact if there are any issues while at the property. The housekeeper on the letter were we given said that he no longer looked after the property. The property owner and Sykes ought to decide who is responsible so the correct information can be passed to guests. We were extremely lucky that the week we stayed the weather was stunning, allowing us to go out and make the most of our trip. Ordinarily, when booking accommodation we hope to find the environment clean and welcoming and somewhere we would not mind spending time if the weather is poor but this was not one of those places. These are not the types of issues we would expect to come across having paid £1760.00 for accommodation. This price bracket is for mid to luxury accommodation and this is certainly not reflected at Little Owl.
- Paul, July 2021Thank you very much for your feedback. We apologise that you felt that your stay was not to the standard you would have liked. We have brought all of these complaints up with the house keeper and we hope to change these as soon as possible in order to provide a better standard to Little Owl. Property Owner
Jane “We had a very enjoyable stay at Little Owl.”
The cottage is beautiful, the garden is very secluded, with lots of space and the addition of the separate games room made my little granddaughter very happy. The beds were very comfortable and the facilities, equipment etc spot on. We did find the living room furniture uncomfortable but as we didn’t spend too much time in there it was ok. Would definitely recommend Little Owl, the area Is full of brilliant places to visit, and even though the weather wasn’t perfect we found plenty to do.
- Jane, June 2021Thank you for your Feedback with regards to your recent stay at Little Owl. It's wonderful to hear you had a lovely stay and we hope to welcome you back again in the future. Property Owner
Karen “Cottage a long way from town;pub; shop.”
Uncomfortable sofa; chairs Shower slow Wardrobes dusty inside
- Karen, June 2021Thank you for your feedback with regards to your stay at Little Owl. Im sorry if the cottage didn't meet your expectations, the other feedback we have had has all been very positive. We hope to welcome you back to another cottage in the future. Property Owner

Steve “This is a lovely looking cottage in a small village with a shop.”
Wonderful garden, and great to have an outside room in the form of the garden playroom. Countryside and walking around is beautiful. Cottage has everything that you need for a holiday. Felt very safe as cleaning was to a high standard. Rooms downstairs are very warm and welcoming. Tip - bring one or two cushions as cushions on sofa have been removed due to COVID-19 precautions, and they are very deep sofas. Bedrooms upstairs have sloped walls as in the eaves, need to take care when getting out of bed in one of the rooms. Beds were too soft for us, though duvet very comfortable. We enjoyed our week.
- Steve, September 2020Thank you for your feedback regarding your recent stay at Little Owl. We always love to received feedback from our guests and we hope to welcome you back again in the future. Property Owner
Geoff “We are regular visitors to Little Owl, as we love this cottage, the garden and the surrounding area of Froxfield.”
As always, the house was very clean, well-equipped and comfortable, thanks to the helpful couple who look after Little Owl. The welcome basket of wine, locally made honey soap, and chocolate and orange cookies, also included some much appreciated treats for our two dogs. We pre-booked tickets for our visits to Exbury, Mottisfont and Hinton Ampner for long walks and picnics, and returned to The Pub With No Name for meals in their garden area, which is in walking distance of Little Owl. As the sun goes down on fine evenings in Froxfield, we sit in the garden of the cottage watching the bats and listening to the hoots of the owls that sit in the huge oak trees that stand between the cottage and the village church. We are looking forward to returning to Little Owl next Spring.
- Geoff, September 2020Thank you for your feedback regarding your recent stay at Little Owl. It's always lovely to hear how much our guest's have enjoyed themselves. We hope to welcome you back again in the future. Property Owner
Judith “Little Owl is a beautiful cottage set in fabulous grounds.”
It didn't matter that it rained every day - the cottage was just what the doctor ordered - getting out of London! The only downside was that some of the crockery was dirty, the lid to an oven dish had previously been broken but was 'glued' together. The beautiful wooden cupboards in the kitchen need a good clean the insides were dirty. The shower cubicle had mould. As there is a dishwasher on site I would suggest after each rental all crockery & utensils are in the placed in dishwasher for a quick wash.
- Judith, February 2020Geoff “Our visit to Little Owl in December was the third week we've spent there since September this year.”
It really is 'a home from home' for us and our two dogs, always comfortable, cosy and spotlessly clean, thanks to the helpful couple who look after the cottage. The dogs were so excited to be back that they whizzed round and round the large, secure garden in celebration! On this visit we discovered 'The Pub with No Name', only five minutes away from Little Owl, which has a warm and welcoming atmosphere, serves great food and welcomes dogs. We made return visits to Hinton Ampner and Mottisfont, both National Trust properties. On the New Forest we saw not only horses, donkeys, cattle and deer, but a large sow with her ten piglets! In the evenings and early mornings at Little Owl we often hear owls calling to each other, and in the narrow lanes around the cottage we've seen deer and a hare. We are already looking forward to our next visit in the Spring.
- Geoff, December 2019Thank you for leaving your lovely comments on Little Owl and returning for a third time. We are glad you were able to experience the local wildlife and attractions. We look forward to welcoming you back in the Spring! Hideaways Cottages. Property Owner
Deborah “We stayed at Little Owl for the first week of September and returned two weeks later for another week, which says it all really!”
Such a comfortable, clean and welcoming cottage, a home from home for us and our two dogs. We visited Exbury, Hinton Ampner and the New Forest for a second time, and on this visit to Hampshire discovered Mottisfont and The Vyne, which are beautiful stately homes with long estate walks for energetic dogs. We are already looking forward to returning to Little Owl in the Spring.
- Deborah, September 2019Geoff “Little Owl was comfortable, clean, peaceful and very well equipped.”
Our two dogs loved to run and play in the large and secure garden which surrounds the cottage. We would recommend walks on the New Forest, Exbury Gardens, Hinton Ampner, Butser Ancient Farm and Corfe Castle as enjoyable places to visit with dogs. The Hare and Hounds at Sway and The Waterloo Arms at Lyndhurst are great dog-friendly pubs, with excellent menus and a good range of choices for vegetarians and vegans.
- Geoff, August 2019Carol “The cottage and garden were everything you needed for a relaxing and comfortable countryside break.”
It was well maintained and looked after by the local caretakers and situated in an area handy for visiting places of varied interest. We were only sorry we had not more time there!
- Carol, August 2019Dick “A beautiful cottage in a beautiful garden in a beautiful part of England.”
A previous poster said in July 2019 "inside the house it was dirty, musty and damp". We were also here in July 2019 and that complaint is patent nonsense. The house is in fact clean and comfortable. (Mind you, we were here for a relaxing holiday, not to get wound up crawling into cupboards searching for spiders to complain about.)
- Dick, July 2019Simone “The House itself is beautiful and the garden is magical, but inside the house it was dirty, musty and damp.”
Spiders and cobwebs were in every corner, in the wardrobes and in the cupboards. The heating was switched off, so that we had to heat with the little electric furnace and wood was not sufficiently available. If you want to have some pictures we can send them to you by email.
- Simone, July 2019William “The bed sheets rather old and tired.”
Bobby and need to be replaced with better, not enough towels a couple more would have been useful.
- William, May 2019Thank you for bringing this to our attention. We have now replaced all the bedding and provided extra towels Property Owner
Janet “Fantastic cottage with excellent facilities.”
Good back up from Howard at the village shop.
- Janet, March 2019Phil “We spent a wonderful week at 'Little Owl' late October / early November 2018.”
We felt at home from the moment we arrived and were sad to leave. It met all our needs, as a family of four adults and two young children, in a beautiful area.

- Mr H,Mr & Mrs Brown “Beautiful cottage, will certainly recommend to friends and family.”
The walk around the Hangers was stunning (just a little muddy). The welcome pack was a lovely surprise. The local pub, The Troopers Inn, did some lovely food. They even opened early for us - would certainly love to come back for another stay!
- Mr & Mrs Brown,Miss Gilmore “Thank you for a lovely stay in the comfortable and cosy cottage.”
It certainly hit the mark for a much needed restful break. Plenty of lovely pubs nearby to eat in (Trouper Inn, Hawkley Inn). We ran the Rubix Chilli Hilly on the Saturday which was very wet and muddy - so very thankful to have a warm cottage to come back to!! Will certainly stay here again. Many thanks.
- Miss Gilmore,Mr and Mrs Derrett and friends “We have had the most marvellous week, beautiful relaxing cottage in a super location.”
The weather has been perfect. We have travelled the area - a trip down memory lane. The pub with no name is a must. Also, the ploughman's lunch at The Harrow Inn at Steep is highly recommended. The cottage is fully equipped with all essentials and the garden is lovely. We will recommend to family and friends, without hesitation. Thank you!
- Mr and Mrs Derrett and friends,Guest's review on TripAdvisor “A wonderful cottage in a quiet village.”
Well equipped, the welcome bottle of prosecco was a lovely touch. The steep stairs may be difficult for disabled guests.
- Guest's review on TripAdvisor,Guests “Thanks for such a wonderful time.”
Sitting in the garden we had all the peace to properly relax and the little ones were totally amazed by all the toys. We definitely would have loved to stay longer.
- Guests,Mrs Sullivan “We've had a lovely holiday in this pretty cottage.”
The children loved their 'own's stairs to the bedroom. Our dog loved the safely enclosed garden and we all enjoyed visiting the many interesting places which were new to us all.\ Thank you for the welcome pack, especially the new toy for Josee. Thanks for everything.
- Mrs Sullivan,The R. family “All enjoyed a lovely holiday in a lovely cottage, surrounded by beautiful countryside views.”
We would recommend the Fox Goes in Charlton and The Earl of March in Lavant, both served great food.
- The R. family,Dr Zhu “We've thoroughly enjoyed our week in this little charming cottage.”
The fireplace was enjoyable to use and the garden has received a good deal of care, making it a delight to be in. Our cat also seemed to enjoy chattering with the local birds - she is a talker rather than a hunter. Winchester was quite beautiful. This was our first time in Hampshire - we were impressed. We discovered some great pub food nearby, including the Thomas Lord and The Hawkley Inn. \ All in all a great holiday in a very nice part of England. Thank you!
- Dr Zhu,Dr Smits and Dr Cortsen “It was very welcoming to arrive at Little Owl with the lights on and it was warm and cosy indoors.”
Thank you for the lovely welcome gifts. We have very much enjoyed our holiday here discovering the beautiful conuntryside. We can definitely recommend the local pub "with no name".
- Dr Smits and Dr Cortsen,Mrs Brickwood “We had a wonderful 'English' Christmas in this amazing cottage.”
We were super impressed with the Xmas decorations. All our friends who saw the cottage on our facebook photos thought it should be on a chocolate box! Many thanks; our 10 year old daughter's dream of sleeping under a thatched roof has come true!
- Mrs Brickwood,Guests “Beautiful Cottage!”
We all had a lovely time staying here. Trooper Inn & Hawkley Inn were great. Thank you. I must say also how nice it was to arrive to a lovely & clean house!

- Dr Zhu,The Walton family “Beautiful, comfortable cottage.”
Well equipped & with all the essentials provided - many thanks for that. Well located for exploring. Here is some of what we did: \ Hawkley Inn walk - quite demanding, especially coming back.\ Winchester - flying visit.\ Portsmouth Historic docks - great but would have needed more time. \ Hinton Ampner - National Trust property nearby - really good.\ Bike ride in New Forest, from Brockenhurst - lovely. \ We were busy!
- The Walton family,The Collins and Swarup families “Little Owl lived up to its photos and descriptions on the web.”
We had a family get together and celebrated a first birthday with parents, grandparents, aunt and uncle. We could not have asked for a more cosy, welcoming and charming environment. The family enjoyed the lawn and had a fun afternoon playing croquet. The living room with its fireplace made for great conversations and games. The kitchen was well-equipped and we were impressed with the abundance and quality of crockery and cutlery and not to miss the cooking range (a chef's delight). We noticed that painstaking thought and planning have gone into the big items as well as the small. Thank you for making our experience so memorable.
- The Collins and Swarup families,Mr & Mrs Reid “On arrival the cottage was a welcome and pretty sight.”
A super, quiet, private retreat. The first morning we awoke to the September golden sun dappling through the trees on our bedroom windows and the chirpy singing of the robin. Perfection! Little Owl covered all our needs and more - Thank you so much for the 'Welcome Pack' - it was a very kind gesture. Pip, our miniature Schnauzer, was extremely happy with his new toy, and abandoned those he brought. A lovely, lovely cottage. Thank you.
