“We feel lucky to have "fallen on our feet" at Sykes Cottage, having only the photograph and description to inform us and not knowing about the immediate area.”

(I was brought up in Guildford so had some idea.) We found Bentley to be a delightful village with lots of footpaths, interesting buildings and a basic shop. Our hosts were charming and made us most welcome, coping kindly when our car alarm went off. The cottage was equipped with absolutely everything a couple could have wanted or needed on a break like this. The decor is tasteful and very comfortable, so we would have no hesitation in recommending a stay. The bijou kitchen means that only one person can cook at a time but that's a nice excuse for drinking a glass of wine while you wait! Thank you very much.

“We spent 3 nights at Pittersfield Mews Cottage in Bentley and thoroughly enjoyed our stay discovering places in Hampshire and Surrey.”

The cottage is charming and cosy, with spacious upstairs area. We found it extremely clean and were pleased with the facilities made available. It is easy to access from A31 and offers plenty of parking space. Off a small lane, above the main village, it is quiet and peaceful. As part of the cottage, there is a small South-facing terrace on the edge of the property's beautiful and large mature garden, where you can relax, read, or eat using the garden table, benches and seats. The owners are charming, helpful and very discreet.

“Peaceful and spacious old cottage - a real find”

Booked right at the end of lockdown as a base for visiting our children and grandchildren who all live in East Hampshire. Lovely converted mews and hay loft, really spacious and comfortable for two. In a very quiet lane right on the edge of this lovely old village, in a corner of the owner's large home and beautiful garden. Owners are lovely and helpful - there if you need anything but leaving you in peace. All the facilities you could possibly want, and easy parking in the big courtyard. Cottage has its own small garden patio with furniture for sitting out of an evening and watching the wildlife. Old English charm, and highly recommended for a totally relaxing stay.

“Lovely cotage, in a nice quiet area on the edge of village.”

Charming owners, there when you needed them and leaving you alone the rest of the time. Cottage was spacious and nicely furnished. Plenty of parking space and a nice corner of garden with furniture for sitting out. Alas, the booking with Sykes was not the most straightforward, their staff appearing to go out of their way to make life difficult. This is no reflection on the cottage, however

The property

Peacefully located down a country lane in the village of Bentley, just below the church and opposite the vineyard, Mews Cottage, part of the former farm outbuildings, is the perfect retreat for exploring this unspoiled part of the Hampshire / Surrey borders. Standing in the grounds of the owners' imposing country house, the cottage offers the opportunity for rest and relaxation in a gorgeous setting. Enter the cottage into the kitchen /dining area; with a well appointed kitchen offering all the amenities you could need, and a dining table with sufficient space for up to 4 guests. On the first floor you will find a light and spacious living area with sofa (which can be converted into an additional bed charged @ £50.00) if required for extra guest) armchair and flat screen tv.

This leads through to the large bedroom with king size bed and flat screen TV.

The family bathroom has all the usual fixtures, including bath with shower over. Outside there is offstreet parking for 2 cars, and a lovely private seating area, enclosed by box hedging and partly screened by magnificent Flowering Cherry and Judas trees.

For guests of a literary persuasion, Jane Austen's house in Chawton is just 5 miles from the cottage. The stunning RHS gardens at Wisley are about 35 minutes away. We feel that Mews Cottage is perfectly located for a peaceful getaway in this lovely part of the country.

Farnham 5 miles, Alton 6 miles

Bentley is the first village across the Surrey-Hampshire border, announcing Jane Austin country. As part of the Austin heritage, the first rector of Bentley was Henry Austen, Jane’s brother, who moved into the Rectory in 1824. Another curate, the Rev. Gilbert White of Selborne, was a regular visitor to Marelands, a Georgian house overlooking the river Wey, in the previous century.
Bentley-‘the green in the forest’- dates back to Roman and Saxon times.
The village, which is described by Warner in the 18th century as 'a delightful, pleasant and neat village,' with well planted gardens and hedges of white thorn, lies on the main road from Farnham to Alton, which is supposed to be an ancient Pilgrims' Way leading from Farnham through Bentley and Alton to Winchester. The forest of Alice Holt in the neighbouring parish of Binsted no doubt furnished cover for highwaymen and robbers, who fell upon merchant and pilgrim on their way to Winchester, to shrine or fair. The outlaw Sir Adam Gurdon is said to have frequented this road with his armed band, and to have devastated the surrounding country to the terror of peaceful travellers until his restoration to his estates by King Edward I
The village developed mostly along the ancient road from Winchester to London. Many of the older houses along the post road were smallholders’ farms dating back to the 13thcentury, which were ‘gentrified’ in Regency times. The village claims the oldest 'cruck' cottage in Hampshire (a cruck or crook frame is a curved timber, one of a pair, which supports the roof of a building, used particularly in England. This type of timber framing consists of long, generally naturally curved, timber members that lean inwards and form the ridge of the roof).
The village has a thriving pub and shop. The village was also home for 30 years to Sir Robert Baden- Powell, so it comes as no surprise that scouting thrives in the area.
The hop fields surrounding the village have now become vinyards, producing Jenkyn Place sparkling wine.
The village is situated approximately 4 miles from Alton and Farnham, the village has a bus service and has a mainline station, which commences at Alton and terminates at Waterloo.
For the active members of the parish there is an array of footpaths, Alice Holt forest nearby as well as Birdworld, and the butterfly meadow. The parish has a newly installed adventure playground for the younger children.
