Judging by the books and furnishings on the premises, Mr & Mrs Barker are a very cultured couple. The cottage had everything we needed in generous supply and we were very comfortable throughout. Tisbury is a village with every facility a visitor could need (Fish & Chip shop, Chinese Takeaway, 3 pubs and many shops) and is a marvellous centre for touring the area. Stonehenge, Winchester, Salisbury, Dorchester, Shaftesbury and Sherborne are in easy reach. Altogether, we had a very memorable time ...

The property

Found at the top end of Tisbury high street, The Old Coach House is a charming, detached former coach house built of stone.

Lying in the grounds of the owners' property, you'll find it incredibly spacious once you step inside.

The living accommodation is 'upside down' so you'll come across the bedrooms on the ground floor, making it suitable for guests with limited mobility (there's a stair lift from the ground floor to the first floor).

Upstairs is a beamed Living Room with exposed stone walls and a pretty bay window providing views over the picturesque Nadder Valley.

Tisbury itself is a lovely and vibrant community with tearooms and deli, and it even has a train station (you can travel from Waterloo to Tisbury in about an hour and a half).

About the location

TISBURY

Shaftesbury 12 miles; Salisbury 15 miles.

An interesting, lively village on the Wiltshire/Dorset border, well served by a good selection of inns, shops, a library, a bank, a garage and with a regular rail link to both London and Exeter. The village is set in the valley of the River Nadder, a good fishing river which gently meanders its way down to Salisbury and where herons, grey wagtails and even kingfishers may be seen - a bird watchers paradise! Along the valley, the lush green countryside provides superb rural walks and cycling. Full of history, the nearby mill predates even the Domesday Book. A visit to the local churchyard reveals a famous 1000 year old yew tree and also the graves of Rudyard Kipling's parents, who lived here. The village serves as a great year round base for exploring this interesting area. Within a short drive are Wilton House, Shaftesbury, Old Wardour Castle, Stourhead, Stonehenge, and the beautiful cathedral city of Salisbury.
