“We loved it here, the house was spacious, beautifully equipped, peaceful, the garden enormous with the most incredible views, so tranquil and just what our family were hoping for and more.”

There was our two year old granddaughter, myself, my husband and the little one's mummy and daddy, we also had a visitor for the day to join us who was equally enthralled at where we were staying. A lovely welcome basket awaiting our arrival and there was nothing more we need, a great utility for walking boots and coats with excellent shower. Loved the orangery for eating in and of course outside as we were so lucky with the weather. We want to return and hopefully we shall next year.

“We booked this delightful cottage for a girlie get-together and cannot recommend it too highly.”

It's picture perfect, chocolate box from the outside and inside is a series of wonderful, characterful, tasteful living spaces with every mod con to make a stay here an exceptionally comfortable 'home from home'. We had the light filled conservatory with views across buttercup meadows to the hills where we could share a glass of bubbly before immersing ourselves in the hot tub, we had the elegant lounge for pre-dinner drinks before sitting together in the dining alcove. We cooked together in well-equipped spacious kitchen and really struggled to force ourselves to go out and explore the area. None of us had ever visited this area of the country before and can't believe how beautiful it is - completely unspoilt with cosy pubs, impressive restaurants and so much to see and do including a foray into Wales! We're thinking there may be a return reunion to this gem of a place.

“The location is great - off the beaten track, peaceful, but within easy reach of the Forest of Dean and all the exciting activities to see and do, as well as local towns for supermarkets.”

Pet-friendly and secure (gates to prevent our labrador wandering off!). Set within easy walking distance to the village. We found everyone to be so friendly and the local cider was lovely. The owner has thought of everything - fresh towels / tea towels / dish clothes / soap / dishwasher tablets / full log basket, etc. We were very impressed with how well equipped the cottage was - home from home. The decor was superb and tastefully done. Initially we had decided against the hot tub hire, but we arrived to it all set up and couldn't resist! It really was worth it after a days walking being able to come back for a soak was superb and watch the sun set with those gorgeous views. We would definitely recommend this cottage and I would love to stay here one day again soon! Thank you.

We would definitely consider staying again. We hired the hot tub and it was easy to use. The owners have left a full instruction book for everything in the property, with guides on the local area etc - we found this very useful.

The property

Rose Cottage is found beside a quiet country lane on the edge of the tiny village of Awre and close to the River Severn where it makes a large loop south of Gloucester.

It makes a great base for exploring this lovely area with your family or friends.

Equipped and furnished to an exceptional standard, the spacious accommodation offers a welcoming and comfortable 'home from home' feel with a big 'farmhouse' kitchen, a delightful conservatory and very attractive patio and garden at the back of the house.

Upstairs two of the bedrooms are particularly large and one of them has a view of the river beyond the fields, lovely to retreat to at the end of a busy day.

Highly recommended for those seeking space and solitude in the country.

About the location

NEWNHAM-ON-SEVERN

Gloucester 13 miles.

The thriving village of Newnham-on-Severn nestles on the banks of the River Severn. The village is steeped in history, and offers specialist shops to suit all interests, along with traditional pubs and cafes. This charming village, part of which is designated Conservation Area, has a tree-lined main street, many listed buildings, a striking central clock tower and is ideally located for watching the spectacular Severn Bore. The Royal Forest of Dean, England's largest oak forest, offers numerous trails that can be explored on foot, bicycle or horseback. Caving, abseiling and a high-wire rope course are on offer for the more adventurous, while fishing, golf, kayaking and canoeing are also available. Gloucester is just a short drive away, where you will find Roman foundations, Victorian docklands and a spectacular Norman cathedral (whose cloisters were used in the Harry Potter films). Littledean with its unique Jail Museum and Quadrophenia Collection, Westbury Court Garden, the only restored water garden in the country and the ancient caves and eerie caverns of Clearwell Caves (as seen in Dr Who and Merlin) make a great family day out. The ancient market towns of Ross-on-Wye and Monmouth have excellent shops, pubs and restaurants, plus many black and white timbered buildings, or visit the historic walled town of Chepstow with its celebrated race course and impressive Norman castle. A little further afield, discover the beautiful Malvern Hills, Black Mountains and Brecon Beacon National Park. A great location for a relaxing break or activity holiday at any time of year.
