“THE OWNER AND THE DOGS WERE GREAT, IF CAT THE WHOLE WEEKEND WAS JUST WHAT THE FAMILY WANTED.”
“The sofas were very uncomfortable and low down, the dishwasher didn’t clean (despite us buying dishwasher salt to put in) so we ended up hand washing.”
One of the shelves on the fridge door was broken. The en suite shower didn’t work properly until the owner came to fix it. The swimming pool was available but we had to ask the owner to turn the heat on which would have taken several hours to take effect. Many of the lights weren’t working. We wasted 50p to turn on the light in the snooker room, which didn’t work. The bins and recycling bins were over flowing and didn’t get emptied the entire week we were there and one bin had maggots in. The property has 5 ticks but certainly doesn’t warrant this level of rating.
“Back for our second summer in The Cow Byre with our two toddlers and, as last year, it couldn't have been a more perfect environment for our kids to learn and grow.”
The adults were able to kick back and let the kids roam, and the lovely weather and superb care from our hosts - even dropping off some toys - ensured we'll be back again next year! Couldn't recommend this gorgeous place more!
“It felt like there was no care at the farm.”
Everything was very tired and dilapidated. It was functionally clean - just not clean enough and mould evident in the property, on tiles in shower and walls in bathroom.Tennis court not maintained so not as it should have been, swimming pool was a duck pond (just indicative of a lack of care). In the property some items of furniture were very worn, (black sofa) and the beds and bed linen were of low quality. One mattress you can easily feel the springs - so my daughter shared her brothers bed. As we left we stripped the beds and the mattresses and mattress covers were not in a good state of repair. Lack of a real welcome, no visitor book and property information wasn't great eg. didn't explain where the laundry room was. A van of workers/builders using another cottage as a B&B option - this makes more sense for this property and may be why we had a cupboard full of pasta and mayonnaise. Not a great family break and we headed out the days we were there. The workers on the farm showed the kids the cows being milked and were pleasant when we came across them. The laundry room was again dirty, things everywhere and not available for use behind a door that says Private. Table tennis table again dilapidated with broken bats. Perhaps we were the first hire of the season, and it is a working farm, (one of us grew up on a dairy farm) and we don't have airs and graces. I would certainly never return to somewhere with such a clear lack of care and investment.
Thank you for your feedback and we are sorry that you have had this experience at the property. We contacted you as soon as we received the feedback and have had an offer of compensation agreed. Owner relations
“We really enjoyed the farm!”
It was a very wonderful place to visit for a family of six. What a magnificent view, which includes free-roaming turkeys and peacocks! The barbecues with that stunning view were a great joy - we had several memorable outdoor meals there. Also really good is that kids had lots of different sporty things to do, including ping-pong, tennis and croquet (must bring your own tennis equipment). We loved being able to jump into the pool at all times of the day. Walks galore right out the front door. The hosts were helpful and very warm, and visiting families were able to maintain a sense of privacy. That it is a genuine working dairy farm also makes it interesting and educational. The apartment is very well equipped - although it could certainly be improved with a better quality double bed and mattress. We will recommend it highly to friends and might well return one day.
“Just a message to say how much everybody enjoyed both staying at the cottages in their lovely setting, enjoying the amenities and having fun in the marquee.”
Thanks you so much for making the whole arrangements so easy and to your family for their relaxed approach to so many people invading their spaces. The children were very relaxed because they had such a wide range of options to choose for their own entertainment. It was such a joy to spend time with far-flung family in such surroundings. Kindest regards.
“Breathtaking views, peaceful surroundings and beautiful walks from the doorstep made this a great place to spend a summer weekend in the countryside.”
The children loved meeting some of the animals on the farm, getting close to the action in the milking parlour and feeding newborn lambs. The Cow Byre itself was quite basic, but with loads of space for the children to play and for us adults to relax. I would definitely recommend it to others. And I think it would be a great place to go with a larger group of friends, occupying several of the cottages which are all next door to one another. If you do take toddlers, just beware of the pond, in the courtyard in front of the cottages.
.. accommodation basic but clean fresh eggs and milk from owners a nice touch and they were very helpful. Family group with 3 children age 9, 7 and 18 months they loved it.... pool a definite favourite.... close to Malmesbury worth a visit and some nice restaurants. Had a lovely Italian on last evening.
“Very obliging owners who are really friendly.”
The cottage was great for us, just outside Malmesbury where we had a family wedding. Weather was not great but still got to use the swimming pool which is heated. Even had a couple of games of snooker in the evenings. Would recommend it as a base for exploring the area.
“This really is heaven.”
A cluster of old farm cottages set in a stunning location with outstanding views and fabulous facilities. It's a working farm so the kids had a field day watching the cows being milked and helping feed the newborn calves. Jane was so welcoming and was at hand daily for any questions or taking the kids round the farm to feed the animals. Yes it's a little run down and a few things missing in the cottages but in the grand scheme of things this place is great value for money. My kids are already pleading for a return trip.
“Stayed here several times in all bar one of the cottages at Maunditts Park Farm.”
Kids love the freedom of being on a working farm and being at one with nature. Good solid self catering accommodation. Hosts very helpful and friendly.
“I just wanted to say thank you very much for a lovely stay at Cow Byre and on your farm.”
We all had a lovely time and it was great to see the countryside, local villages and relax.
“Just stayed here with a group of friends and already planning on coming back.”
Everyone was extremely welcoming & friendly, gorgeous views from all angles, everything including pool & sauna clean & easy to use (make sure to bring some £1 coins to top up the sauna!) you can look around the farm at lots of different animals & are welcomed to watch the milking (if you get up early enough!) got good use out of the tennis court, table tennis & snooker table. All kitchen appliances easy to use and in good order. HIGHLY recommend the Somerford Arms down the road! not really walking distance, took us about 20 minutes to get there but best steak I've ever had and fantastic service! Malmesbury also good for a visit, very pretty, a few charity and gifty shops, go to Amanda's Oxford Street bistro for a great full English!
“We all had the most fantastic time.”
The location was beautiful, the cottages well equipped and homely, the facilities were brilliant (the ping pong table and the pool were much enjoyed by the children particularly!
One of five, converted stone farm buildings, Cow Byre is situated on a 370 acre working dairy farm on the southern edge of the Cotswolds.
Overlooking a pretty central courtyard next to the dairy, the barn can be combined with H133 - Stable Cottage, H134 - Orchard Cottage, H135 - The Granary and H136 - Bottom Barn, making this a perfect option for a large family gathering or a group of friends.Children will delight in the farm animals roaming just Outside the window such as cows, guinea fowl, turkeys (and the odd peacock), and can be shown round by the owners.
There are also plenty of long walks across the farmland, which includes a bluebell wood and a stretch of the River Avon where coarse fishing is available by arrangement.
A wealth of other activities are also at guest's disposal on the farm - swimming pool, hard tennis court, croquet lawn, sauna and games room - and once you've finished enjoying all of that, you have your own private area of the garden where you can unwind at the end of an exciting day.
Inside the barn itself, you'll find plenty of room particularly in the well-appointed, open plan living/ Dining Room while the bedroom with bunk beds and additional single bed, is great for children.

Dating back to the Iron Age and reputedly the oldest borough in England, the pretty market town of Malmesbury is located on a hilltop in the southern Cotswolds. Malmesbury is steeped in history and offers visitors over 400 listed buildings, a 15th century Market Cross, a ruined 7th century Benedictine abbey, an annual carnival and many independent shops, cafes and traditional pubs. Abbey House Gardens, home to 'The Naked Gardeners' can also be found in Malmesbury (Note: The gardeners are clothed during normal opening hours) and the annual Womad Music Festival is close by at Charlton Park. The area offers many country houses, including Rodmarton Manor and Gardens, and Chavenage House, a fine example of a Cotswold manor unchanged for 400 years. Just a short drive away is The Cotswold Water Park, an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, covering 40 square miles and offering a wide range of activities, including boating, waterskiing, fishing, cycling, golf and horse riding, plus Bath, Cirencester and Tetbury are all within easy reach and well worth a visit.
