“Access to the property is through the garden from the car park and then up outside sets of steps.”

Maybe a consideration for guests who are less mobile.

Maybe a consideration for guests who are less mobile. We were given a very warm welcome by our host and a welcome starter pack of eggs, butter, milk , bread was there for us which was lovely. This is a beautiful tranquil spot in a lovely wooded valley. The apartment is part of an elegant period property, sympathetically furnished, and we enjoyed our holiday here very much.

The property

Built in the early 19th century, the current house at Castle (a former medieval manor) has elegant, classical lines and gothic features.

Typical of a Cornish country house, it is built from local granite and is a very impressive sight as you approach it.

Once inside, you'll find a lovely, homely ambience where close attention has been paid to the decor and soft furnishings, including thermostatically controlled underfloor heating, an open fire, a contemporary, fitted kitchen and a state-of-the-art bathroom. You'll also have use of the extensive, and very impressive, gardens with a variety of large trees (Redwoods, Noble Fir, Beeches, Palms) and shrubs (the Rhododendrons, Camellias and Azaleas are particularly stunning) although you'll also be able to enjoy your own garden area with garden furniture and a barbecue.

About the location

Bodmin 5.5 miles; Fowey 7 miles.

A delightfully peaceful country town, nestling in the Fowey river valley amid the woods and fields that characterise the area. Renowned as a centre for the antiques trade, there are several shops and dealers in the town, as well as a fine collection of country pubs, restaurants and a thriving farmer’s market. Lanhydrock House (NT) and gardens is just 3 miles away, while the fabulous Boconnoc House, Eden Project, shipwreck museum and tall ships harbour at Charlestown, and the picturesque fishing villages of Mevagissey, Fowey and Padstow, with the famous Rick Stein restaurants, are all within easy driving distance. The tumbling Atlantic surf, long sandy beaches and dramatic coastline of the north coast, including at the renowned Newquay, make for great days out and there is also chance to enjoy river canoeing, biking, hiking and leisurely walks in this lovely area. The friendly locals also have ongoing activities, such as the raft race, the famous tug of war, Carnival week and seagull outboard motor races. The river Fowey runs from the town on its 8 mile journey through the fields and wooded valleys to the gentler southern coast, a natural paradise for those who love the sea. Centrally placed, with much to do and see in the immediate area, Lostwithiel is the perfect choice for those seeking a break away from the hectic pace of the tourist resorts.

Note: There is a refundable good housekeeping bond of £100.
