There’s so much going on in Wiltshire this summer, we can’t wait to get out and about and visit...
The Weymouth Eye opened its doors today ahead of schedule. It was due to open in July for the Olympics but has been finished ahead of schedule.
Standing 53 metres tall, the observation tower offers panoramic views across Weymouth Bay. The Eye contains a glass pod that will gradually rotate as it climbs the full height of the tower, providing a 360 degree view over Weymouth Bay and along both lengths of the Jurassic Coast.,/p>
Segments of the tower were transported from France and Hungary. The central steel column was built in five sections, each weighing 11 tonnes. The crown, which was raised into place in March, also controls the engine which will drive the viewing gondola.
Weymouth and Portland will host the Olympic sailing events throughout the 2012 Games. This is the perfect opportunity for those holidaying in Dorset cottages to see the picturesque views of the bay.
