Those who are staying in New Forest cottages will soon be able to use modern technology to help get stuck into nature; a smartphone app is being developed that will help with the scientific hunt for the New Forest cicada.
The app will listen out for the distinctive call of the highly endangered insect, described as a “high-pitched love song” that is only just audible to human hearing. This will essentially turn any smartphone which has the app into a portable cicada detector.
Once the app has detected the specific sound it will alert the user that a cicada is likely to be in the area and the sound will be uploaded to a server for scientists to accurately identify.
Anyone looking to spend a holiday walking through the New Forest should certainly download the app to get involved in the search for this endangered species, a great opportunity to do some good whilst on a great holiday.
