There’s so much going on in Wiltshire this summer, we can’t wait to get out and about and visit...
When visiting Dorset in the New Year, there is no shortage of exciting events happening in January for those staying in country holiday cottages. Whether it’s getting out in the fresh air, making the most of the heritage, or simply relaxing, there’s plenty to do to keep all ages occupied.
Each New Year’s Day on the sandy beach of Lyme Bay, approximately 200 swimmers take to the freezing cold waters in aid of charity. The swim will be taking place at 1pm, and is a great event to watch after a festive lunch.
Last year saw more than 1000 spectators watch the brave participants take part, and this year you can come along and help them raise money for this year’s charity – Help for Heroes – in memory of the British destroyer HMS Formidable, which sank in Lyme Bay in 1915.
Those with an interest in all things antique will want to come along to this wonderful fair taking place in Purbeck on January 16th. The fair will be held in Furzebrook Hall, which is easily reachable from many Dorset holiday cottages in Poole, Bournemouth and Dorchester. As the leading antiques fair in the county, there will also be a fantastic selection of food, with local delicacies such as Dorset fudge and biscuits available to purchase.
All are invited to join experts from the Wessex Astronomical Society at Durlston Country Park on the 24th January in order to learn about stargazing. A short talk will be given in the visitor centre, before being given the opportunity to view various constellations visible from the large telescope in the observatory. There will also be a number of smaller telescopes set up by members of the society, which can also be used by those attending to examine the night sky.
