Where to enjoy the sunshine in Wiltshire

More than half of Wiltshire is designated as an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, filled with grand country homes and the iconic Stonehenge and Avebury World Heritage Sites. There is clearly plenty of outdoor activities and sites to enjoy in Wiltshire and they’re even better in the sunshine.

There are plenty of outdoor activities to try while on your stay at a holiday cottage in Wiltshire, but we have hand-picked some of our favourites where you are guaranteed to enjoy the sunshine.

Have fun in the sun in Wiltshire

Visit Longleat

Longleat Safari and Adventure Park is one of the country’s best loved attractions. In 2016 the park celebrated its 50th anniversary and was the subject of the BBC’s Animal Park. As the first drive-through safari outside of Africa, over 1,000 animals call Longleat their home.

If you’re not brave enough to get up close to lions, rhinos and monkeys, there’s plenty more to do around Longleat. Take the Jungle Cruise toward the gorilla colony, and keep an eye out across the water, where playful sea lions will come and say hello. There are also plenty of opportunities to feed some of the animals, including the giraffes.

Go to Stonehenge

Estimated to date back to 3100 BC, Stonehenge is one of the most iconic British landmarks. As one of the wonders of the world, this heritage site is among the most significant locations in the country.

Europe’s best-known prehistoric monument looks even more stunning in the Wiltshire sun. You can walk around this landscape, before taking a look inside the Neolithic houses where you will learn about the tools and objects used in everyday Neolithic life. Inside you can marvel at the 250 ancient objects and a man who is over 5,000 years old.

Take to the skies in a hot air balloon

There is no more exhilarating way to see Wiltshire and the surrounding area than in a hot air balloon. Rather than admiring these colourful balloons in the sky from your garden and thinking ‘that must be amazing’, why not try it yourself?

Cotswold Balloon Safaris offers unforgettable 360 degree views of one of the finest landscapes in the country, with Captain Mike at the helm. Captain Mike is one of the world’s most experienced hot air balloon pilots who has flown over the Masai Mara and snow-capped mountains of New Zealand.

Balloon safaris like this offer you a vantage point that you have never experienced before. While you can appreciate a beautiful view of rolling hills and countryside, the sights available for you in the skies above are a league above.

Splash around at Cotswold Water Park

Set across 40 square miles of beautiful Wiltshire and Gloucestershire countryside, the Cotswold Water Park balances blood-pumping action with tranquillity in a truly serene setting.

Whether you are looking for fast-paced water sports or to spend a peaceful afternoon birdwatching, there is something for everyone here. With more than 150 lakes making up a unique landscape, you can try your hand a new skill like sailing, or even cable skiing.

Elsewhere, the area is full of life. Wonderful flowers and animals can be found across the 150km of paths and cycle ways.

It doesn’t matter if you want to simply relax and appreciate the beauty of the local area at your own pace, or if you need the adrenaline rush from an active adventure, Wiltshire has got you covered.
