Great Places for Coffee in Dorset

The UK may be most associated with a lovely cup of tea, but so many of us will attest there is nothing more satisfying than a freshly brewed cup of coffee.

A favourite all over the world – and at any time of the day – people love their coffee. And in England’s southern jewel, Dorset, there are plenty of places that will not only give a great cup, but offer a great experience as well.

If you’re looking for a place where you can bring in the morning paper and put your feet up, or maybe you are looking to cap off a nice afternoon with a latte, there are plenty of places to try throughout the area. When you are enjoying the perfect cottage holiday in Dorset, here are some places to consider:

Number 35 Coffee House & Kitchen

Before they opened, the owners of Number 35 knew they wanted to be different. They wanted to be a place where people were comfortable just being. For all customers, they aim to provide good food and good service, but most of all, great coffee. Resembling more of a living room or study, they provide a great place to enjoy just that in Dorchester.

Fully licensed, they also provide beer and wine specials on Friday nights. On Saturday mornings, they offer a special brunch menu. But their coffee is the star of their menu. With a rotation of blends and styles, Number 35 bring their coffee in from suppliers like Extract, Square Mile, Union, Hasbean, and others.

With a location in Lyme Regis, AROMA is a local favourite serving coffee, tea, and freshly-made cakes. They are an independent coffee house who take pride in their relaxed atmosphere. All of their coffee is locally roasted and sourced.

Visitors praise the coffee shop for its welcoming atmosphere, but also love its simple but delicious food. Whether a morning visit, or afternoon treat, AROMA is definitely worth a visit when in Lyme Regis. They have free Wi-Fi and local art for sale. With toys and books available for the kids, settle into one of their comfy sofas and enjoy your time in Dorset.

Olives et Al

Tucked into the Poundbury development outside of Dorchester, Olives et Al mixes wonderful coffee with artisan foods. Perfect for breakfast, lunch and afternoon treats, this eclectic shop is perfect for foodies and fans of exotic locales. Inspired by the Mediterranean and North Africa, they offer potent, delicious blends of coffee and espresso.

Locals and visitors alike flock to the shop. With a keen eye on healthy and flavour-packed foods, it is also a perfect resting place while shopping at Poundbury’s many shops and stores. They also have a location in Sturminster Newton to enjoy as well.

Flirt in Bournemouth is so much more than a coffee shop but, rest assured, you will remember the cup, the décor and the experience. Started in 2011, the café offers coffee, tea, milkshakes and great food, as well as drinks in the evening. Located on The Triangle at the top of Bournemouth’s busy High Street, Flirt has plenty of indoor and outdoor seating.

It also has plenty of things to look at. Amidst retro, shabby chic design elements, they offer a full coffee menu and are open until 11pm. For a change in pace and to satisfy your sweet tooth, Flirt also specialises in a number of unique and delicious types of hot chocolate.

Boscanova and South Coast Roast

This award-winning group of coffee roasters and baristas take their coffee very seriously and the people of Dorset are the beneficiaries of their obsession. Brimming with independence, both places welcome visitors to chill out and enjoy their coffee in style. Boscanova on Christchurch Road and South Coast Roast on Richmond Hill sell locally roasted and prepared coffee.

For true coffee lovers, the owners offer classes in coffee cupping, home brewing, a barista course, and even classes in latte art. In recent years, Café Boscanova was named by The Independent as one of the UK’s 50 Best Coffee Shops.

Dorset Coffee Co.

Maybe your cottage is too cosy and you just don’t want to go out. For those looking for the perfect local coffee experience from the comfort of your temporary home, plan ahead to bring in some freshly roasted local Dorset coffee. The Dorset Coffee Co. offers a number of flavoured and premium blends and they can be purchased online or at several local shops.

The company is the result of owner Nigel Green’s love affair with coffee. The company was started in the late 1990s and locals have been enjoying their unique, but delicious coffee ever since.

If you want to find some refreshment while out and about, the coffee from the Dorset Coffee Co. can also be bought (and drank) fresh at several local farmers' markets, including Dorchester and Poundbury.
