Dorset events guide: May 2015

Dorset in May boasts a fantastic selection of events, many of which are exclusive to the county. From those which recognise the fascinating history of the area to those which include weird and wonderful sports, there’s plenty to experience during a stay in Dorset holiday cottages this month.

Lyme Regis Fossil Festival

This unique festival on the Jurassic Coast will be celebrating its 10th anniversary this year, with a variety of scientific and hands-on events. This includes a fair, where those attending can find fun and rare fossils and minerals, as well as enjoy a variety of walks, music and comedy. A number of talks with scientists from a number of organisations such as the Natural History Museum, Natural England and Dorset Geologists have also been organised. Taking place from 1st-3rd May, the Lyme Regis Fossil Festival is one that can be enjoyed by all the family and is a great way to discover more about the heritage of this spectacular stretch of coastline.

Dorset Knob Throwing and Food Festival

It’s time for the infamous Dorset Knob Throwing event once again, with participants getting ready to take part on Sunday 3rd May. For those of you who are unfamiliar with this unusual sport, a Dorset knob is a hard, dry savoury biscuit, which is thrown as far as possible by contestants. The aim is to throw the furthest. The general public are invited to get involved, with three knobs costing just £1. Throughout the event there will also be a selection of local food stalls displaying fresh produce for you to both taste and purchase.

The Broadchurch Experience

As one of the most watched UK drama series of 2015, it’s no surprise that Broadchurch now has its own devoted guided walk, which is sure to attract many viewers to the area. On 25th May, a limited number of people will be able to head on a super-fan experience, witnessing places and landmarks of West Bay that featured on TV screens in both series one and two. Locations include the Police Station, the Newsagents, and Beth's jogging route to name just a few.

If you can’t make this date, check out our Broadchurch trail to see the sights in your own time.
