Dorset event guide: February 2015

Dorset is a wonderful county to visit at all times of the year and February is certainly no exception due to the great number of events that are planned this month. Visitors staying in holiday cottages in Dorset can learn more about the authors inspired by the county, take part in an unusual sporting event and see the first signs of spring.

Purbeck Literary Festival

Earning a fantastic reputation for celebrating the authors associated with Dorset, the Purbeck Literary Festival is highly recommended to those with an interest in books and literature. With so many famous writers being either inspired or coming from the area themselves, such as Enid Blyton, T.E. Lawrence and Thomas Hardy, you too can take inspiration from the landscape while getting involved with a variety of events. Workshops with authors, literary guided walks and interesting talks are just a small taste of what visitors can enjoy from 16th February to 1st March.

Charity Pancake Race

Shrove Tuesday has to be one of the most looked forward to days in February, and Christchurch is certainly making sure that it is celebrated properly. Organised by the Christchurch Food Festival, there will be a number of pancake races in the cobbled area of Church Street, where local celebrities and businesses take to the track with their frying pans. Beginning at 10.30am, the event often attracts hundreds of spectators too, so come along and join in with the tossing activities!

Snowdrop Weekends

Forde Abbey and Gardens will be holding Snowdrop Weekends throughout February, where visitors are invited to come along to admire the beauty of the white flowers and welcome spring. The shop and tearoom will also be open, which is perfect for a cream tea after a morning or afternoon spent wandering in the spectacular gardens. Tickets cost just £5 as part of the reduced winter rate, and all children under the age of 15 are admitted for free.
