Wheelwrights is situated deep in a valley beneath Fontmell Down, some 3 miles to the south of the Saxon Hilltop town of Shaftesbury. It adjoins a large 18th century stone house, “The Old Forge”, in a very attractive courtyard setting. This is a highly unusual location, full of character and atmosphere. If you have an interest in vintage cars then this is the place for you. The owner, Tim’s post-war car restoration workshop and small museum with all its “automobilia” and 1934 Lagonda will transport you into a bygone era. A little way up the track Lucy keeps Arab horses, a donkey and free range hens.
Wheelwrights is also a fantastic spot for keen walkers, with footpaths leading directly up to Compton Down and Fontmell Down, part of an area of Outstanding Natural Beauty managed by the National Trust and well known for its wild flowers, butterflies and iron age cross dykes.
The surrounding area has visitor attractions a-plenty – stately houses and gardens such as Chettle, Stourhead and Longleat and an abundance of picturesque country towns and villages – nearby Ashmore (700 feet above sea level, with the highest duck pond in Dorset!), Cerne Abbas (Cerne Abbas Giant) and Shaftesbury itself (Gold Hill and Abbey remains) to mention but a few. A long stretch of the South Dorset’s magnificent UNESCO designated Jurassic coastline is reachable in under an hour.
Wheelwrights has all its accommodation at ground floor level and provides a comfortable and attractively furnished base for exploring this beautiful part of Dorset. NB. Some daytime traffic noise at this cottage.
