Standing on its own in open farmland with long views over fields and woods, this former shooting folly has instant appeal. The building is wonderfully quirky and unusual with a crenelated mock church tower at one end, a stepped gable at the other and in between a simple, brick and timbered thatched cottage. Transformed from a ruin by its current owners back to its former glory, the cottage is a unique ‘hideaway’, perfect for walkers, honeymooners in fact anyone seeking peace and tranquillity in a remote rural environment.

Situated on the Shropshire/Staffordshire border, an hour and a half's drive from Birmingham and Manchester, it is well-situated for exploring this attractive area. For walkers there is a network of public footpaths all round, the 7½ mile circuit from Cheswardine via Hales and the folly itself being mentioned in The Times article “A good walk” of 30 April 2011. The Shropshire Union canal and the Shropshire Cycleway are nearby and medieval Shrewsbury and Ironbridge Gorge World Heritage site are about half an hour each by car. The Stoke-on-Trent Potteries, walled city of Chester, Alton Towers theme park, Biddulph Grange (NT), Offa’s Dyke Path on the Welsh border and Housman’s ‘blue remembered hills’ all make an ideal day’s outing.

The owners have restored the cottage with utmost care using high quality materials and have made imaginative use of the available space to provide comfortable and attractive rooms full of unusual features. The Shooting Folly has been graded 4 Stars by Visit Britain.

The Shooting Folly was featured in The Guardian "Valentine's escapes" article of 26 January 2013.

We have just spent a long weekend at The Shooting Folly in Shropshire. I just wanted to say how lovely the property is - warm and cosy and very, very cute. The owners made us feel very welcome (fresh eggs in a basket) and even popped in to turn up the heating when we were out! Highly recommended and an excellent addition to your properties.

A relaxing peaceful location. It has rekindled our hobbies of sketching and writing. Beautiful countryside, beautiful folly.
