Reached by a woodland track from a country lane and standing on its own in an attractive clearing by a trout pond, which is fed by a small stream, The Old Pumphouse is a real 'hideaway'. Three miles from the small town of Lydney, the property is within easy distance of all the attractions of the Forest of Dean, the Wye Valley and the Border castles (Chepstow is 9 miles away). The whole area is ideal for walkers and cyclists and the owners have made special footpaths through the surrounding woods for the particular use of guests. The Estate also has a craft centre, crazy golf, a garden centre and a wholefood restaurant, 2 miles away.
The building was converted in 1997, creating large, light and airy spaces and has undergone further refurbishment, making it a highly desirable, unusual and interesting property in a very peaceful and attractive setting.
Entrance lobby leads to very large open plan sitting room with open fireplace. Very bright kitchen/dining room with huge, floor to ceiling, double glazed window incorporating French doors, which open on to a south facing patio. Open stairs from sitting room to 1st floor. 3 bedrooms - 1 double with wash basin, 1 with zip & link bed offering twin or king size double also with wash basin and 1 smaller twin. Bathroom/wc with separate shower cubicle. Additional wc.
South facing patio and a very private, semi-wild, 2 acre garden beyond. Barbecue. Small stream runs alongside the property, which feeds an attractive pond. (Although the pond is fenced, care is needed with small children).
What a great retreat.
The Pumphouse feels as if it's well off the beaten track but it's still very accessible. It's very peaceful and surrounded by trees (Lydney estate). Driving up the lane one evening we saw a herd of deer crossing in front of us heading into the forest. How cool is that. Lydney house is only open for two months in the spring and well worth a visit. the Roman settlement is particularly impressive, as is the museum attached to the house. (the cakes in the tea room are mouth watering and well worth sampling). The formal gardens are extensive and full of colour this time of year. The Pumphouse is spacious and well appointed. Very well presented, clean and tidy. They had even laid the fire for us. The beds are very very comfortable. A fantastic place.Guest's review on TripAdvisor, 24 April 2014, 5 of 5 stars
Amazing , magical, relaxing.
We had a wonderful time, there was a welcome basket of fruit and essential items to get our stay off to a very comfortable start, also a phone call to make sure everything was OK.The house is stunning, spotlessly clean, ,all the bedrooms are lovely ,the kitchen is very well equipped with everything we needed .The lounge area was so comfortable, with a glorious log fire and a more than sufficient supply of logs ,totally relaxing, the dogs loved it .after the lovely long walks in the surrounding forest..It is set in its own forest and the dogs were able to walk freely..We had some stunning walks in the forest surrounding the house.A truly magical place ,we cant wait to go back.Guest's review on TripAdvisor, 10 April 2014. 5 of 5 stars.
