The Nook is a charming 18th century Grade II listed cottage which was originally the village school room and the site of an old cider press! It is set in the heart of a delightful conservation village of stone and thatched houses on a quiet 'no through' road near the church where Thomas Hardy's parents were married. Ideally placed for exploring this area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, the Macmillan Way and the Hardy Trail pass the front door and there are local walks in all directions from the house, some of which can incorporate a visit to a local hostelry.
Sherborne with its beautiful abbey and two castles is 8 miles away and Dorchester, the county town, is 13 miles to the South. The World Heritage coast, e.g. at West Bay, is about 18 miles South through beautiful West Dorset countryside, with its many interesting Iron Age hill forts, on the way. Riding, golf and fishing are available nearby and the owners can provide free short-term membership of the local Tennis Club which is less than 5 minutes' walk away. Extensive files of local information and maps are provided by the owner, together with lists of good local pubs and restaurants.
Adjacent to the owner's home (the thatched house in the main picture), The Nook is very comfortably furnished with a number of antiques and pictures and a fully equipped 'Shaker' style kitchen with Portmeirion china. There is also a pretty south facing, enclosed garden with a small vine and wisteria shaded terrace and garden furniture for al fresco eating.
Comments from previous visitors
"The Nook is by far the loveliest cottage we have stayed in - pretty, homely and beautifully equipped from the kitchen to the exquisite furnishings, china and pictures. All enhanced by David's friendly and helpful presence; he and the village have made us so welcome. We so appreciate being able to bring our dog and he has had a wonderful time. Dorset is a wonderful county.....so many lovely villages, so much stunning coastline." Mr & Mrs Griffiths, August 2009.
"A delightful and cosy cottage in a really pretty village. Loved reading the history of The Nook and Melbury Osmond." Mr & Mrs Coleman, September 2009.
