| To find a rural haven such as this charming country cottage within the London area is rare indeed. It is an ideal base for visiting London's many attractions, including the Tower of London, Madame Tussauds, Oxford Street and the London Eye. And yet, returning home, you are likely to see squirrels and foxes, perhaps hear the nocturnal hoot of an owl, even glimpse a badger.
The property dates back some 150 years and was originally one of two adjoining very simple gamekeepers' cottages, which were altered considerably in the Victorian era. They stand on their own, a quarter of a mile along a wooded track, set against a backdrop of privately owned woodland, with National Trust woods and a golf course across the valley to the south. For walkers, the track leads through to nearby parts of the North Downs and a large park with children's playground.
Pubs, restaurants and a supermarket are within a 1 mile range. Central Croydon, 3 miles away, is 15 minutes from London by fast train (one daily ticket gives you unlimited travel on trains, buses, the London Underground and Croydon's trams).
To the south, Brighton and the coast, Arundel and other castles and the country towns of Kent and Sussex are but a short car ride away.
Ballards Cottage has been graded 4 star by Visit Britain.
