The 1848 mellow brick stables once used for stabling the farm’s heavy horses at Manor Farm have been expertly converted to create two self-catering cottages of a particularly high standard. Looking out across a large gravelled courtyard they form part of a fascinating collection of Grade 1 listed, medieval buildings at Manor Farm in the pretty Hampshire village of Rockbourne. The cottages offer wonderful opportunities for walking on the farm – about 1,000 acres of arable and pasture land – using the marked foot and bridle paths, which cross open farmland and natural bluebell woodland.
The two cottages are next to one another and can be booked individually or together, providing accommodation for up to 10 guests with a large, extendable dining table in Stable Cottage. The smaller of the two cottages, The Tallet, has been specially designed to offer level access for disabled visitors. Both cottages offer high quality accommodation, simply yet stylishly furnished and with the building’s original timber structure a real feature in many of the rooms.
About a 10 minute drive away is the boundary of the New Forest, one of England’s oldest remaining forests created by William the Conqueror. Now officially a National Park it encompasses large tracts of unenclosed wood, heath and grassland and supports a huge diversity of wildlife. The forest offers miles of foot, bridle and cycle paths and, in addition to its unique landscape, has a wide range of visitor attractions – Beaulieu (National Motor Museum), Buckler’s Hard (where Nelson’s favourite ship was built), Exbury Gardens (world famous Rhododendrons & Azaleas). Also within easy driving distance of Manor Farm are the historic cathedral cities of Salisbury and Winchester, Wilton House, Longleat Safari Park and the beaches, yachting marinas and resorts of the South Hampshire and Dorset coastline. The World Heritage city of Bath is a must for a day's excursion. Fordingbridge, 3½ miles away, with its arched stone bridge over the River Avon, is the nearest shopping centre while Rockbourne itself boasts its own Roman Villa, trout fishery and a very popular thatched pub, The Rose and Thistle, which is just a few minutes’ walk from Manor Farm.
