Gun Hill Cottage The sitting room has double doors which lead out to a brick paved patio area The double bedroom upstairs

This enchanting, weather-boarded cottage borders ancient woodland in the Low Weald of East Sussex. The surrounding, unspoilt, heavily-wooded and undulating landscape is criss-crossed with footpaths, bridleways and lanes with fields, streams, tucked-away cottages and appealing rural pubs.

One of the vicinity’s lovely walks is the Wealdway, which meanders 1¼ miles to Chiddingly, a classic English village with church, pub (The Six Bells), cricket field and street of quaint cottages. Horam Manor (1½ miles to the north) offers fishing, nature trails, riding lessons and pottery painting, while for keen golfers there are courses at Horam Park (1 mile) and Wellshurst (3 miles). Gun Hill Cottage is also conveniently close to the award-winning Gun Inn (¼ mile), which is known for miles around for its superb food and atmosphere. There is a children’s play area outside.

Further afield, but still within easy driving distance, are the ancient village of Alfriston, (8 miles) with quaint tearooms, oak-beamed pubs, antiquarian bookshops and Clergy House museum, and Seven Sisters Country Park (12 miles – bicycles may be hired) where the Cuckmere River meanders its way down to the sea and a shingle beach. Not far off is Birling Gap - a charming unspoilt beach with sand and rockpools at low tide, near Beachy Head. Lewes (12 miles - Sussex’s historic county town), Eastbourne (13 miles - with leisure attractions for all the family) and Brighton (18 miles - the south of England’s most vibrant seaside town) are also all within striking distance. This part of Sussex is rich in stately homes, gardens and literary legacy including Charleston, the Bloomsbury Group’s country home, Bateman’s, former home of Rudyard Kipling, Glyndebourne (the Opera House), the Gage family’s Firle Place, and others.

Accommodation

Gun Hill Cottage has undergone an extensive programme of refurbishment, no expense having been spared in making this a really comfortable and homely place to stay. Tastefully modernised and furnished throughout, the cottage retains elements of its original character and charm and will accommodate up to six guests in its four bedrooms.

Front entrance into lobby. Hallway with pool table and small open fireplace. Downstairs bathroom/wc. with independent shower above the bath. L shaped sitting room with fireplace containing a wood burner, dining area and double doors out onto a brick paved patio area with vine covered pergola. ‘Shaker style’ fitted kitchen with butler sink and door out to “orchard” garden area. Downstairs double bedroom with door to the garden. Back hallway. Specially lit, carpeted stairs, NB open on one side and with handrail on the other, lead up to a small landing area. Upstairs: 3 bedrooms: 1 double, 1 twin and 1 single. Bathroom/wc with independent shower above the bath.

The cottage is set in a third of an acre of garden and includes a shallow band of woodland behind the cottage, which supports a diversity of wild flowers and birdlife. Relax by the kidney shaped pond (approx. 8ft x 4ft and 20” deep) with its underwater lighting system and ‘statue’ water feature or enjoy the lawned areas extending into the woodland beyond. NB Small children must be supervised because of the unfenced pond.
