Gull's Rest is set high on the hillside, with magnificent views over the village, harbour and out to seaThe huge sitting room gives access to a terrace and garden, which overlook the village and harbourGull's Rest

Set high on the hillside and with magnificent views over the village, the harbour, the sea (as far as Weymouth and Portland on a clear day) and the World Heritage Jurassic Coast, this superbly appointed house offers a luxurious base for enjoying all the pleasures of this popular area. There is so much to explore: the Cathedral city of Exeter (about 45 minutes by car), the Regency town of Sidmouth; National Trust properties (Killerton and Shute Barton, for example), and Lyme Regis with its famous `Cob`. On the coast, the visitor is spoiled for choice: endless beaches, both sand and pebble, wonderful walks (the South West Coastal Path is just at the end of the road), and the fossil-hunter`s paradise of the Jurassic Coast cliffs. Beer itself has much to offer, too: the caverns, formed by quarrying stone from Roman times onwards; Pecorama, a railway-themed attraction with fine gardens; and a wide variety of shops, pubs and places to eat. There is also an attractive, sheltered harbour and shingle beach.

Gulls Rest is one of those rare houses which inspire involuntary gasps of delight. The owners extended the original property to take full advantage of the amazing views, both from inside the house (most of the front of the sitting room is glass and the vast master bedroom has a similar front wall and a balcony), and from the attractive terraced gardens immediately outside. With its superb facilities - state-of-the-art kitchen with granite work-tops, generous bath and shower rooms (even a sauna!) - and its general air of welcome, Gull`s Rest qualifies on all counts as the perfect base for an unforgettable holiday in this lovely area.
