| The chalet-style building is reached from the owner's own drive and nestles in the hillside above the courtyard behind the main house. It is reached by a flight of wooden steps leading to a large, private and sunny deck area looking straight out to sea (partially visible, especially in winter). The whole of the front of the building is glass, flooding the interior with light, and the recent conversion has produced an extremely attractive Scandinavian feel, with lots of pale wood, bright rugs, comfortable furniture and modern fittings - a wonderful place to which to escape.
Wooden steps from driveway up to elevated deck. Sliding glass door to large, very light, living room with fitted kitchen area, dining table and spacious, comfortable sitting area. Double bedroom, overlooking the deck, with 5ft bed. Bathroom/wc with separate shower cubicle.

Like The Cottage (H524), La Retraite really is a 'hideaway'. Situated ½ mile down a 'no through' road (directly overlooking the Bristol Channel and leading to the beach) with almost no passing traffic, it is surrounded by National Trust Woodland where fallow and red deer are frequent visitors. There are superb views of the coastline from above the bay and, for keen walkers, the South West Coast Path is close by. The rocky cove at Woody Bay, reputed haunt of smugglers and which has a sandy beach at low tide, is a 10 minute walk further down the lane, while the famous valley of the Rocks is a short distance to the east.
La Retraite is excellently placed for a wide variety of outdoor pursuits with horse riding, sea, lake and fly-fishing, golf (Saunton Sands and Ilfracombe) and surfing (Croyde Bay and Woolacombe) all on offer. Exmoor (smallest but one of the most beautiful of England's National Parks) rises behind the rocky cliffs, with its moors, streams and famous Lorna Doone associations. Local village amenities are available at Lynton & Lynmouth (approx. 5 miles), the historic market town of Barnstaple is 16 miles and the seaside resort of Minehead 20 miles.
